I never really understood all the fuss about the 16-45mm lens and "incredibly sharpness".

The 16-45mm was my first Pentax lens but efter buying some old Pentax MF lenses I know now what sharpness is - and what sharpness is not. In my humble opinion the 16-45mm lens is hardly "incredibly sharp" - more like "decently sharp".

Throw in some horrible CA in high contrast situations, and the lens performance falters. Maybe I was unfortunate to get a copy with bad optics?

Regards,

Martin

Perhaps. While the 16-45 may not be "incredibly sharp," I have found it more than merely "decently sharp." While it doesn't quite match the performance of some of my old Pentax MF lenses, it comes pretty close, particularly at the wide end. Nor have I found the "horrible CA" in high contrast situations to be that much of problem. The lens is no worse, in that respect, than my old M 20/4 and my K 35/3.5; indeed, in some ways, it's better, because the CAs are easier to clean up in post on the zoom than the old primes; and the 16-45 is clearly better than the DA 12-24 and considerably better than the DA 10-17 when it comes to CA issues.

To be honest I must admit that the centre sharpness is quite good. I did made some nice close-up/macro shots at 45mm/f5.6.

Initially I bought the lens for the extra 2mm on the wide end for landscape shots. But the corner and extreme sharpness really drops - not to mention the increase in CA (at least that is my experience). So I was kind of disappointed after reading lots of good reviews and comments about the lens.

I paid about $360 for it, and I guess, I can't expect to get "prime lens performance" all through 16-45mm for that kind of money. I never really did night city photography with long(-er) exposures, so I'll give it a try with this lens.

Regards,

Martin

Well depending on your use of the lenses I would rather buy DA40mm/f2.8 Ltd. For the long side DA70mm/f2.4. Both will serve you better then any of the zooms.

17-70 4.0 is not bad, but 16-45 is better if you shoot against light. 17-70 is better in resolution and especially in CA!

A28 2.8 against 16-45

holy s..t ! what a epic CA on the 16-45 !!! That was a reason, why I still dont buy this lens... Why pentax lens so full of CA ? Maybe not all, but zooms...

My decision is - I buy Sigma 24-70 f2.8 macro without hsm.
Its 400 usd new, less CA and +20mm. I need to 55mm if analyzing my studio shots.
Sigma in the way now, and I hope my copy will be good.

Pentax have 24-70 2.8, and its maybe a gorgeous lens, but I cant buy it in my region.
