Newbie Macro ?

I am new to photography in general. I have a K10 and am intrigued by macro photography. Is the Pentax 50 2.8 macro a good choice for a beginner, or would I be better off with the Tamron 90?

The choice of macro focal length is driven by the photos you want to take. If you are into jewelry, stamps, coins, documents - the 50 is by far the better choice, because you can work more closely to the subject. If you are (as I am) into bugs and flowers and things like that, the 100 range of macro gives you a better stand off distance, and scares the bugs less.

It all depends on what type of Macro you want to do. Both are super lenses. The 50 2.8 Macro lens I would recommend for larger subjects, such as flowers, and larger insects. The Tamron 90 will get you a little closer like larger bugs, and such. You also might want to look at the Pentax FA 100mm Macro f1.4 a great performer all around. Also a 200mm macro for very up close and personal on smaller objects.

My macro set-up is an A series 50mm f1.7 with a set of vivitar extension tubes (which are very heavy!) which added up to about 60 on ebay. although i originally bought the 50mm lens cos i wanted one. So i guess i kinda got a macro lens for 25.
