Learn from my mistake :(

SO last weekend I spent in Santa Barbara. I bought the 18-135mm WR and it was scheduled to be shipped on Thursday (my wife and I were going to leave Friday morning).
Long story short, i was impatient and wanted the lens for my weekend trip, so I gave UPS authorization to leave my package at the front door without a signature. I live in an apartment, and i Have had things left at my front door with no problems before.
But this time, the lens was stolen
The most disappointing part...besides spending the $400 and getting nothing in return...is that people would do that, and that I lost trust in my neighbors.

I made a claim with the company I bought the lens from, and they said that they would investigate. But, I think I am out of luck since I gave authorization to leave the package without a signature.

Oh well, live and learn.

Sorry to hear about that. I live in a cul-de-sac and UPS always leaves packages at my door, even when a signature is required I haven't had anything stolen yet, but the potential is always there. At least there is some distance between houses, versus being in close proximity like an apartment complex. Good luck with your claim, I hear it's a tedious and difficult process.

Yep. Same thing happened to my DA70ltd.
Luckily, the package was insured.
I almost cried when I was told that i would be reimbursed for my loss.

I thought it was gone forever, and I was left with $500 worth of hole in my wallet and my soul.

UPS leaves stuff for me all the time. They've even left signature required stuff. I don't mind, though, because the house is back in the woods down a long driveway. You can't see it from the road. Still, someone could take something and they wouldn't have to have fear of being seen.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope you are able to get something back for it.

Thanks guys, its good to know that I am not alone
It just sucks to know that I have scumbags that live (or their friends live) in my building

This lens was going to be my travel lens/wet weather lens.
If I don't get reimbursed (don't want to get my hopes up) then I will just go with the 18-55WR and be done with it. I have DXO so that will help a bit.

I've had stuff that was signature required left without a signature, so it's no guarantee. Hope it all works out for you.

Whoa, that's such a bummer! UPS leaves signature packages all the time for us, but he always sets them (all packages) right inside the front door.

Every house should have a secure metal box where you can drop off big packages and retrieve with a key.

25 years ago when I worked for a firm in Canada we would avoid UPS like the plague. Today in Ireland I do the same. Leave a package with a neighbour without authorisation? Hold up items at the border looking for extra dosh? Charge outrageous handling fees?

Yep, that's UPS.

I receive lots of packages. I find UPS no more problematic than other carriers. A FedEx driver trashed my carport and drove away without notice. I've had both FedEx and UPS packages not reach me.

UPS has been the most reliable carrier in this area for a long time. FedEx has gotten better recently. I think it all depends on the driver you happen to have.
