DA* 16-50 Replacement Request for Pentax

With a replacement for the beautiful but flawed DA* 16-50 f/2.8 expected next year, I think it's time to get a head start with a formal request for Pentax (or Pentax USA) to offer some kind of special trade-in/trade-up program for owners of the current lens if they buy the new lens.

It's no secret that the DA* 16-50 can produce spectacular results at the right focal length and in the right circumstances. It's also no secret that it has been a problematic lens marred by spotty quality control, disappointing optics at some focal lengths and even the dreaded auto-focus motor failures.

For those owners who spent the not-inconsiderable amount of money to buy this lens and those who've hung in there with it... there should be some kind of reward and incentive to go for the new one.

At least we got a response (and may even get a camera) when we petitioned Pentax for a full-frame body. Maybe if enough of us ask for a special incentive with the replacement for the DA* 16-50, we'll get that. It can't hurt to ask.

I, for one, would love to keep my kit all Pentax. How about you?

Heh, I'd love it too, but honestly no company in their right mind would ever do something like this. You can, however, always sell your lens on the marketplace

What puzzles me is why SDM is still so unreliable, and why in light of this only one lens has DC.

There is no replacement announced for the 16-50 (unfortuantely). The 16-85 or whatever it is won't be a constant 2.8 zoom, probably more like a 3.5-5.6, and therefore won't be a replacement.

Last I checked the 16-50 sdm bought in 2011 had very little issue with QC and SDM. Or am I wrong? They could just allow us to use the screw drive function via a firmware upgrade. SDM makes sense during video and situation like in a library, otherwise SD works wonder and gives extra insurance. Or perhaps allow any problematic SDM to be fitted with DC motor FOC? That would give a booster to pentaxians.

During the interview posted here, Kawauchi clearly stated they are replacing the 16-50mm. It can hardly be considered a replacement if it's not f/2.8. My guess is it won't be end at ~85. Probably a bit lower.

sorry you have a problem. Maybe I will at some time, but I bought a second hand 15-50 in 2007 and never had an issue with it---and it's been
my walking around lens so they CAN be good.

This is what Kawauchi said:

A: If you look at the roadmap, there is a lens with a shorter focal length. So, I think you could assume we are considering a replacement for
the 16-50mm.

I don't find that answer very clear:
- What is the "lens with a shorter focal length" he is referring to?
- Does he mean that this "lens with a shorter focal length" could be considered as a 16-50 replacement, or does he mean that the existence of this lense on the roadmap hints that they are also considering making a 16-50 replacement which is not on the roadmap yet?

Also the words "you could assume we are considering" is not realy a definite "yes".

Is he referring to the "limited" zoom I wonder. "shorter" I'd assume means times focal length (as in 50/16 = 3 times)

Sure, but that is the case with any lens with in-bult drive. And in general with cameras too. Looking at the statistics available at lensrentals and similar, DA* nad SDM is by far not the worst out there.

well...how long has the 16-50 / 50-135 been around since it was first launched?

I am pretty sure Ricoh has some tricks that would make the new 16-50 even more impressive.

It could mean a new Mark II version of the DA*16-50 and it isn't on the lens roadmap. I really can see the DA*16-85 being a f2.8 lens. My guess it will be a f4.0 lens. Anyhow, Kawauchi did state there are lenses that are not on the lens roadmap.
