kalimar 60-300mm 4-5.6 same as Tokina, Cosina, Soligor?

so I was searching ebay and ran across a kalimar 60-300mm 4-5.6 about to end cheap. I found one mention about it being very good and a quick search for selling price on ebay made me pull the trigger and impulse bought it. I paid 99 cents plus 5$ shipping, supposedly in like new condition (canon fd mount but I should be able to convert it).

After the fact I found some had sold cheaper but still 5 times what I paid (31.50 minolta mount, 45$ pentax mount).

I have only found sporadic info on it. There are several reviews on dyxum for the cosina 60-300mm 4-5.6 and it is highly rated. There are mentions in the various reviews about people having the soligor, vivitar and tokina versions. The last review says

"I've had 4 copies of this lens in past years, branded by Tokina, Cosina, Kalimar, Soligor respectively. They differ from each other in details, but always have 67mm filter ring. "

all the reviews are here
Cosina

So kalimar, vivitar, and soligor are rebadgers but I was under the impression that cosina and tamron were manufactures? Why would 2 manufactures make the same lens, or are they not the same lens? I it was something along the lines of vivitar designed it, and tamron and cosina made it, why would other rebadgers be selling it too?

Does any one know the relationship of these lenses, and are they the same lens design? Does any one know if the kalimar is any good? b&h wants 80$ for one in nikon mount so I assume its not junk?

There is also a sears 60-300mm 4-5.6 but I have no idea if it is related to these either?

The sears lens sounds like it might be the same. The whole rebadging thing is quite common even today: for example, samyang=vivitar=bower, and some tamron lenses are the same as Pentax lenses (such as the FA 28-105 and DA 18-250).

Don't know anything about this particular lens, but it sounds like a good old generic!

Thanks for the response. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but build quality wise it seems to be on par with my vivitar 70-210mm ver 3. Hopefully image quality will be on par with its apparent build quality.

I want some of what B&H is smoking.

I have the Sears version. My father had a Soligor years ago. As far as I can tell they are the same lens.

They weren't bad on film, not great either. No idea about digital, I've never used the Sears on my K-x. (Too lazy to remove the Ricoh pin, and it will get stuck.)

The only thing I have really found to compare different ones are picture on ebay but they do seem to be different in appearance. Also, here is a sears one made in korea (samyang maybe?)
Sears 60-300mm Camera Lens, Model 202, perfect shape. BARGAIN BID! | eBay
but mine is made in japan.
The appearance seems to be different too so I'm wondering if this is like some of the vivitars where several different manufactures made them? The fact that there is a cosina and a tokina version would seem to support that. I guess there is no easy way to tell who made it though?

@boriscleto, was yours made in korea or japan?

The Sears is made in Korea.

Soligor imported its lenses from Japan, so I'm thinking the one my father had may have been a Sakar.
