Comparison between FA 35mm f/2 and SA 35mm f/2

Hi guys!

I've read this review since Nov 2010 from Thai's Pentaxian website, Pentax Friendly Community .

Here is the link,
Pentax Friendly Community

Actually, this site is pretty strong community for Pentax users in Thailand even the populations are still quite low comparatively to Nikon or Canon users, I guess it's the same around the world .

The user name "mada" he made the comparative review between FA 35mm, which Pentaxians believe it's the hidden limited, and it's sibling SA 35mm while he had a chance to own them at the same time. I saw this review and wanted to reveal to every Pentaxians so I ask him and he said yes. Therefore, here it is... (I'll try my best to translate Thai to English though.)

First of all,
Lets take a look at their bodies. They are pretty much the same.
1. Pentax's hood allows user to use a C-PL filter because there is a small hole on it.
2. Samsung's front cap is thicker and easier to be used, especially when hood is on.
3. There is "Pentax JAPAN" label for Pentax's rear cap but not for Samsung
4. Differences of details labels.

Every times he tried they just gave the same results. He's pretty confident that there is NO focusing issue because he zoomed 100% after each shot.

He didn't test at f/5.6 - f/11 because he wouldn't expect that there would be any significant differences between FA and SA lens.

By the way, how to make pictures bigger? In the link they are pretty big and enough to be clearly seen. Is there any special method to attach pictures here? Thanks.

I thought that these were the same lens, just different label. Could the differences be due to sample variation?

They ARE the same lens. What you see IS sample variation, and possibly some very slight difference in coatings. These lenses and a couple Samsung dSLRs are from an era of Samsung-Pentax partnership, before Hoya bought Pentax. Some Samsung lenses are labeled Schneider-Kreutznach Kreuznach but are actually Pentax, like the 18-55 kit lens. I think the Samsung-badged products might be slightly cheaper -- that would be the main difference!

I strongly believe they are identical.
I highly suspect the soft image are due to Front/back focus.

If he took a few picture with live view, or shot a few pics with manual focus and pick the best one, the result will be more accurate.

I have the SA35/2 and I dont think either of one is better than the other.

Honestly, before I saw this review I, as well, thought the same way that they are exactly the same but I changed my mind. This guy, mada, has a pretty good reputation in Thai community. So I think the review is kinda believable.

Moreover, a couple guys from Thai community also confirmed the result at wide open of Pentax FA 35mm. However, they didn't have Samsung at that time. I believe that FA and SA have a different coatings which could make the differences results here.

I wish if someone in PF also own both of these gems so please please please make some comparisons. I would be so happy and appreciate...
