Hi everyone,

Long time did not post and I am sure everyone has forgotten about me

The last time i was here, i was asking about primes. I now own 3 beautiful primes - DA15 + DA35 Ltd + DA70. I am pleased with all of them.

I wanted to get a 52mm filter for these lenses. The filter that i wanted to get does not come in 49mm thread version.

How do i fit a 52mm filter to the DA15? I read somewhere in this forum that fitting an empty 49mm lens with the front element removed + a 49-52mm adaptor + 52mm filter will cause vignette?

What other ways can i go about this?

search "step up ring". I use 52mm ND filter with my FA 50 and DA 50-200 all the time - The ring cost ~ $10 and its easy to find if you know what to ask for.

I cant just use a step up ring for the DA15 as the built in lens hood will be in the way. The DA35 Ltd and DA70 is fine, however. Just the DA15 being the misnomer here.

I wanted to get a Hoya HD CPL (yes, i know about using CPL on UWA but i wanted the filter in some situations nevertheless) + a ND8 + ND400 + ND Grad (Tiffen).

The ND8 and ND400 I can get the 49mm filter thread but the Hoya HD CPL and the ND Grad only comes in 52mm version. So I was thinking to just standardize all filters to using the 52mm thread.

not sure about the DA 15, but the DA 21 has a unique hood that allows filters to be screwed into it using a smaller diameter thread... It's 43mm ID

Personally, I've gone with the b+w xs-pro mount cpl. Costs more money, but it won't vignette and you can use a second filter on top of it with only a small part of the corners vignetting.

The other thing you can do is take a beater filter, pop the glass, remove the retaining ring and sand the filter ring down to 2.5mm to 3mm (iirc). This should allow you to attach the step-up ring and will only vignette in the most extreme of the corners up up to f/5.6. I did a thread on this a year or two ago, so if you check the threads I've started, you should find it pretty quickly. Just do yourself a favour and be careful of the edges after you sand....they are sharp.

I also use a B+W 49mm CPL on all my limited's. I don't tihnk it's worth the trouble with a 52mm + step up ring when your 3 lenses are all 49mm filter sizes.

I have 49mm on all my Ltds - If you get the 52 next you will need new lens caps as the 49mm won't fit. Alternative is not to have any filters and take your chances. I use my 52/49 step down ring on my Sigma ring flash. The smallest ring availble was a 52.

Alternative is not to have any filters and take your chances.

I am not looking to use any UV filters for my limiteds....I prefer to use them open ended It is just the ND filters causing havoc here

Buy/find a super cheap 49mm filter. Remove the glass and voila, you can now use a standard step-up ring. Easiest fix there is, worked perfectly for me and took all of a minute to remove the glass from the filter ring.

i got mine from B+H (B+W 10 stop and 6 stop)

also looking at ND grads right now, i am looking at hitech and singh ray, unsure if there will be vignetting though if combined with another filter like CPL or ND (B+W) screw ins if i use the cokin style step up system

With the xs-pro cpl, you can add an nd filter of 49mm or add a cokin 49mm adapter ring and use any p-series ssized filter. The xs-pro is very slim but it gives you enough clearance of the hood. I personally use the b+w 6 stop nd on the cpl a lot and if I need to use grads, I add the cokin holder to the cpl and use a singh ray 2 or 3 stop gnd with a 3 stop nd (if required).

Yes, this works with the DA 15, but you'll get vignetting if you use a step-up ring. I have a 52mm B-W 3.0 ND filter, but it vignettes quite badly no the DA 15. I think the only workable option is the Hoya x400 ND filter, which comes in 49mm size. If you only have 49mm filters, that's not a bad option. Better, in any case, than those of us who have both 52mm and 49mm sized lens filter rings.

B+W makes 49mm ND filters, I have a 10 stop and 6 stop. No vingetting I can tell on a DA15 using either of these. I'd imagine it's having to stack a 52mm filter on a step up ring and that then on a 49mm ring with glass punched out that is causing the problem.
