Sharpest 24mm Pentax lens?

Hello :-)

I have for some time now been looking at the pictures taken with a variety of lenses and tend to have a preference for the way SMC lenses render. I bought the SMC Takumar 55mm f1.8 which I do not find to be very sharp but with a very attractive rendering!

I'm now looking for a 24mm lens (preferably one with a low aperture value) for a Sony NEX-5 and would appreciate a recommendation as to which SMC lens is considered the sharpest while retaining the - to me - somewhat special rendering of the SMC lenses....

Thanks for reading and maybe replying,

Jesper

Well, I think the FA* 24 f/2 probably would win that contest but it usually sells for around $600

If you can find either a SMC Pentax 24/2.8 or SMC Pentax-A 24/2.8, those may be your best bet.
Pentax didn't make a lot of 24mm lenses so they are often pricy and hard to find.

Sigma 24/2.8. Well, none of the Pentax 24 is really sharp, especially not the FA*24.

What about the K 24/3.5? I thought that was supposed to be quite good.

I had one, but I sent it back. Not sharp.

However, just today I've taken delivery of a Sigma 2.8. I'm just back from taking some shots. It is a *very* sharp lens. Highly recommended.

The K24/2.8 gets very solid reviews from owners with the only negatives being cost and short focus throw.

I have both the FA* and the K.
The FA* is sharper.
In real use, both are considered sharp enough, so to me sharpness is not really relevant.

The K24 in real world usage is much smaller than the FA* and the FA* is smaller than the Sigma 24/1.8
To me this is the main difference.
Something small and not encumbering like the K, or something still bearable but largish like the FA* (the Sigma 24/1.8 is no-no for me) for a whole day walkabout.

Both have very good flare resistance.
I formerly had a Cosina 24/2.8 macro, that was perhaps as sharp as the K, but flare resistance was pretty far in comparison.

Both have pretty nice bokeh for what is considered WA lenses. Not al WA are like this. The Sigma 24/1.8 certainly has a more busy bokeh to me.

Hi All - & thanks for replying,

Based on your feedback I tend to be most keen on an SMC 24 f2.8 k type, however, the notion of autofocus (the Sigma) is also attractive.

@tcbubbleleo: It might be interesting, but I guess you live in the US (?) so shipment and customs will add to the price ... I'm also wondering if it can be autofocus on an NEX-5 which in my memory has a different mount than other Sonys? Do you know about this?

I'll post a WTB thread in your marketplace for a 24 f2.8 K - with the hope for a reasonable price.

Thanks again for replying :-)

no, it cannot focus on Nex camera, since they aren't Pentax K mount. If you insist putting a Pentax on your Nex camera, I sugguest you find a Manual Focus one they are way less inexpensive, and you would lost the Automatic Focusing anyway.

Yes, the Sigma 24mm f/2.8 lenses are nice and sharp, while being much smaller than the f/1.8 versions. The made them in all manual (the Super Wide), manual with A setting (Super Wide II) and autofocus, also called super wide II. The AF Superwide is the best 24mm lens I have found to use on a Pentax DSLR, but I have not tried the FA*. I am in the process of testing it out against the DA21, but so far the Sigma is ahead. The K 24/2.8 sounds nice, too.

The Ensinor 24mm f/2.8 Macro is very sharp, though difficult to find sometimes. It is also very reasonable in price.

Hello

& thanks again for replying. I think I'll just ponder what to do - and also see if one of you here in the forums will reply to my WTB thread in the marketplace....

Weekend regards from Denmark,

I 've the Sigma AF 24mm f:2.8 superwide II and I find it really very good. ( only a tendance of overexposition on my Kx of 1il or 1.5 il ). I like it and it's quite always on my camera.
