As others have said, it's all about the combination of focal length, aperture, and distance to subject/background. This will affect the way you compose, but if you learn to work with the restrictions that you have, you can make plenty of blur

As other said, you can achieve a nice OOF with the kit lens, specially when you make photos of small subjects like flowers or when the background is far away. It's a superb lens for a kit lens IMHO.
