New Pentax 16-50 DA* Lens

Just received my new generation Pentax 16-50 DA* Lens in return for my older first generation. The difference to my eyes is quite startling.

I have posted an images here:

Good news!

So will Pentax exchange the new generation 16-50's for the old generation ones currently owned by their customers?

Have they actually re-designed the lens?

I think it is like many lens manufacturers, where there are some better batches than others. I think I got a newer SN with tighter tolerances perhaps. I say this with reservation, as I cannot answer that question with any authority. As far as I know there were no design changes.

The DA* 16-50 has been driving me nuts and I don't even own one!! I've been contemplating getting it to replace my DA 16-45 but, I have yet to see image samples that support the swap.

Since I don't own one, is the IQ of the second generation 16-50 that much better than the 16-45? Also, how can I be sure to get a second generation lens?

As always, thanks for you help.

How can you tell a "new generation" from an "old generation" lens? Is there a range of serial #'s we need to be aware of to make sure we are not buying old stock?

I'd be interested in the SN you got as well Ben. I'll be looking for some new glass this year and this one is near the top of my list. Good news and i hope they keep the QC up on the new glass from now on.

Serial of 16-50

@Benjikan:
would you be so kind to publish the first 4 digits of the serial?
I got my new lens too and there are absolutely no problems with it.
My serial starts with 9017xxx
Thanks in advance

don't think that will help. Seen "good copies" as far back as 9010***. At least from users
And bad copies(?)9016***

NOFI Benjikan, but are these the best test shots you could came up with to testdrive a new lens? Including using the on-board flash with lens hood on?

How do you think it compares to the 16-45 in IQ/Bokeh?

Well I have had 3 so far, all of which has SN's that started with "9" and all were clunkers :-(
I am currently waiting for number 4 to be shipped, I hope it's "new generation".

Sounds like the lens is like what the old motoguzzi factory used to be like.
If the bike was made on a friday you were screwed cause all the workers would be on the vino.

I got a 16-50 and it is as good as my 50-135 so i am happy as.

I also have to say that anyone looking at all the forums would think there is a stack of faulty lenses that have been made but i am sure that it is more of a case of these people are making a more lot of it than the people that have one and are completely satisfied.

I can certainly understand people being annoyed, frustrated etc dont get me wrong, i know i would be too and the fact that they are so hard to come by would be the reason why the some people get return faulty ones.
I bet the shops are recycling these instead of sending them back when they get caught short. Also this is another great reason to buy local, you can try it before you buy it.
I wouldnt shell out any cash to this amount for something that is a precision instrument not trying first. Sure some people will not have a choice but it is the cheapest form of insurance to making sure you get the right one first time round too.

I have shots from both lenses at 50mm on the same subject on my flickr pages.

If you want to look at the colours and contrast of these two lenses as a pretty direct comparison then you are welcome to have a look. flickr/knumbnutz.

Cheers Neil
