Need lens for practical purposes

I needed to take some shots of some equipment in a closet, another of a door, and some close ups of a trim piece. Information to send on for ordering parts, or showing a work site, documenting the state of something before we dive in.

I used my 50mm, but it is too long.

I'm thinking a zoom, maybe 17-70? 16-45? Any suggestions?

Get one of the high-quality F2.8 zooms. I would make my choice from among these three:

DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Introduction - PentaxForums.com

For product photography, keep in mind that it is equally important to have a good lighting setup!

Do you not already own a zoom? Something in particular about the kit lens you think won't meet your needs?

I don't. I got a DAL55-300 with my body and have a growing collection of longer lenses. Ran into this particular need yesterday, and foresee having to do it again.

Buy a used DA L 18-55, should not pay more than 60 bucks.

Is all you need.

Wouldn't a point-and-shoot work for that kind of record?

Erf, I'd say the 16-45 is worth the buck compared to the kit 18-55..

You should be able to get a decent one for 60 bucks.
If you only have one DSLR, a P&S is a good backup.
