What's going on with Pentax 12-24mm?

I've been wanting to get Pentax 12-24mm for months and it's not available in either BH and Adorama?
What would be an alternative to this lens from other manufacturers?

I suspect this lens is no longer being made to be honest. I guess what stock we do see is surplus stock from smaller stores who can't shift it which gets redistributed to those that can like B&H.

I could be 100% wrong, but add to this that a replacement is on the road map, this is what I suspect is happening.

BH and Adorama aren't the only camera shops, you can buy from other places like Amazon, ...

Try the Sigma 10-20 as an alternative. You get some interesting fish-eye effects as a bonus when you use it at 10mm on a FF body.

Tamron 10-24 is what I got instead. There are LOTS of threads discussing the UW Zooms here.

B&H had this lens back in stock last week - now when I look today it is out of stock again - I guess the folks from the thread listed above grabbed the few had!

Twitch's explanation makes the most sense. It's actually out of production and a few are found here and there and redistributed to larger sellers from time to time. The new 12ish to 28ish lens listed as a "DA Wide Zoom" slated for 2013 "or Later" release is likely its replacement.

BH is taking orders on the newest version of the Sigma 12-24 which is splash proof as well (their version of WR) for $949. It's also FF compatible.the older version not WR is still available for order at 829 (and they have some used from 699)
not a constant aperture is it's biggest drawback )4.5-5.6)

It is possible there is a new model coming from Pentax (the roadmap shows a wide zoom)

The Sigma 12-24 FF has gotten some poor reviews. I think for The Sigma 10-20 (older version) and the Pengtax 12-24 are the better choices.

Sigma 12-24 II is great on full frame, I think the crop pentaxes will not be a problem for it!!!

I thought I saw B&H having the DA 12-24 for 599 or 699 (can't remember) for a short period of time. It would be a real steal for 599 or even 699 for DA 12-24 f4, perhaps that is the reason why they are usually out of stock; as soon as it is available at reasonable price someone snap it up quickly.

Congrat on your purchase as you are one of those alert buyers; I am sure you will be happy with that, I used this lens primarily on trips to Asia in the past. The good thing about this is that you can use it wide-open at all focal length and get excellent results. It also exhibits little or no discernible distortion on the wide-end; the thing I like the range is that 24mm is most useful for me than 10mm as others have used the 10-20mm lens from another brand.
