Lens reviews - price history

I'd like to know how this chart is generated. (Both the "new" and "used" price)

ie. does it obtain prices from B&H because it's the partner of this forum or is it user reported?

The price history is based upon the prices listed by the PF members, when they write their lens reviews. It is the price at the time of the purchase (price equivalent in US$).

Those are prices reported at the time of the reviews, which may have no relationship with current prices. Thus those of us who bought our FA50/1.4's back when it listed at US$199 will drag down the price curve. For a realistic view, only consider fairly recently released lenses, because prices for older stuff will be all over the place.

And a good place to see real prices is on eBay, in the COMPLETED LISTINGS sections. Enter any lens name and see what recent actual selling prices are -- and which buy-it-now's didn't even get a bite. This is where you'll see the closest to real market values, not the trolling-for-suckers fantasies.

You can also take a look at the marketplace archives section. I'm working on making these charts represent more-current data, though we've got a crapload of data to mine through to make that happen

The charts are a fairly good resource for discontinued lenses, though, and they'll tell you how much they're going for on the used market.
