Just so you know, Chrome doesn't like the security issues it sees with your links to wingincamera.zenfolio.com due to automatic redirects that are not secure. It refuses to display these photos unless I override some very stern warnings. Sorry, but I won't do that. And it isn't out of ignorance. I've worked in the IT field (and still do) for 30+ years. That kind of redirect HAS been used by others as a conduit for malware.

Cross posted from post your photos...

It's stinking hot, so we took the dogs to the swimming hole....

One of Tess' photos, just so you have an idea where we were.

The DA 18-135 was the only lens I took, I didn't have my macro lens, but it filled in admirably.

All the small flower 18-135 images (includes some from last year.)

Were you using some kind of reflector for some of those flower images?

No reflectors, but being small flowers, a lot of them light up like light bulbs when the light is on them just right. I very rarely use any kind of reflector or even fill flash. If I keep walking around, I usually find a light situation that works well. Many of these flowers are in partial shade. The advantage to that is I have a fairly narrow dynamic range and have space on both sides of the curve. That means in PP I can do what ever i want with the image, using levels or curves. I also try and find images where the flower is in sun, but the background is in shadow. That really helps make the flowers stand out. There's quite a lot you can do to control light with just a camera and an eye for what you're looking for.

It's also quite possible I'm getting fill light from the rock that is under these plants...it's not a terribly reflective surface, but it does throw some light up from the bottom.

Okay, I know what you are talking about. Murphy's Law dictates that most of the time when I am carrying a camera with an appropriate lens that won't be the case. On the other hand, I have on a few occasions made my own light. Recently at a lakeside cottage I borrowed a white plastic lawn chair and flipped it over to use the bottom to bounce some light into small wildflowers that like shade.

I've only had my 18-135 for a month now, but I am liking its versatility.

Thank you for the information. I wondered why I was having trouble posting photos. I have posted other photos linked from Zenfolio into other threads without apparent problems, but then at other times the photos will not display. I will contact Zenfolio and see if they have a solution. Thank you for explaining the problem to me.

Anyone used the 18-135 with a Canon or Rayon close-up filter?

I have some test shots with the Raynox DCR-150 and 250. Lots of vignetting, especially with the 250.

Thanks.

I was thinking of getting the Canon 72mm with a stepping ring.

Another question:

A circular polarizer for this lens...

...slim or not slim?

Comments? Advice?

Thanks.

I bought a cheap eBay polarizer, regular not slim. It does not vignette and does a reasonable job of polarizing, but mechanically it's crap. If I remove the little port and reach my finger into the hood, the CPL ring binds, it won't turn. I need to remove the hood and turn the ring with no lateral pressure. A CPL does help a lot though, so my advice would be, get a decent one.

18-135mm @ 18mm f8, no CPL:

18-135mm @ 18mm f8, with CPL:

I bought a mid range polarizer that I don't quite remember if it's slim or not (don't have it handy). Since the lens will produce vignetting without a filter I imagine having one will add to it but honestly I have found I never really need it.
I own several CPLs and pretty much never use any of them, or if I do it's to slow the shutter like a ND filter for moving water.
