And I think that they are all saying "Oh look, he's got a Pentax".

More prosaic, but more likely, "Has he got some food for us? Nothing but dry grass here."

Revisited Petworth park for the rut. Didn't need to stalk the herd as standing among the trees the Stags would just walk up to you.

I've noted that my copy seems to be very touchy with lower light situations, making a lot of grain even at low ISO. In brighter light, wider aperture, or longer exposure, it's not too bad. I'm starting to get more comfortable with it as I strive to find good reasons to keep it instead of some (dubious) upgrade.

You'd think that excessive grain would be a function of the camera rather than the lens. Low light affects colour and contrast, even with a low ISO. Conversely, images in good light can do well even with a high ISO. I can't say that I find the 18-135 any different from other lenses in that regard. For the images on the beach, it just looks like a low-contrast scene to me. You could just bump up the exposure and contrast a bit in post if you want more subject detail.

That's what I've thought too but then I've slapped on my 55-300 PLM (at 55-100 FL), 100mm WR Macro, or even my M 50mm 1.7 and the graininess goes away. I'm not saying it's terrible but my copy of the 18-135 just seems more finicky to fine tuned adjustment than my other glass. Maybe it has something to do with camera firmware and it's internal profile for this lens?

You could try saving as RAW and make comparisons with post-processing software, but AFAIK the built-in profiles will adjust only distortion by lens ID and adjust colours by camera body. Random noise is a function of the sensor and the camera's processor, but some lenses produce images with more contrast, even if the files are processed the same and better contrast looks less noisy/grainy. Aperture and focal length also play a role in how distinct the changes in colour appear and while the 55-300 doesn't offer wider apertures or more contrast at the same focal length, at longer focal lengths you will get more subject isolation from telephoto compression. Another possibility is a decentered lens or problems with back or front focus. The D-FA 100 Macro is a sharper lens and lets in more light, the f1.7 50's have less distortion (and no auto-focus problems ), but when I compare apples to apples between the DA 18-135 and DA 55-300, the results are very similar.
