18-135 makes a good...

...goat portrait lens. Taken at a Goat Yoga class my friend was promoting on her Facebook LIVE show. This baby goat named Pint was by far the most mischievious goat there. He chewed on her hair, her ear lobe and tried to remove her T-shirt. Influenced by this thread, I致e put my 18-135 back in the rotation on my K70.

For a brief moment, I had a flashback to a few dates when I was much, much younger.

Ha! I知 68 and I know what you mean. I have pictures of Pint nibbling on her hair and ears and standing on her back facing aft pulling up on the tail of her T-shirt but I was using a Sony a6000* for those, thus I am prohibited from posting those in this thread.

*Back before I sold all the Sony stuff and doubled down on Pentax.

I left the Pentax 16-85 at home today.

My friend Tara, social activist, media expert and professional emcee, asked me to photograph an event this morning. Seems representatives and volunteers of all the homeless outreach organizations were meeting downtown to raise public awareness. Tara has a Facebook LIVEcast show and social media presence with 10,000 followers, many are local people of influence. I provide still photographs that go out to whatever organization she is promoting for use on their social media pages and websites. In this case, mostly talking head photos of little interest outside the organizations pictured.

My normal loadout for an outdoor daytime event is the K-3ii with my 16-85 and K70 with a Sigma 8-16 or Pentax 55-300 PLM with the other in reserve. But today I decided to take the two lenses that I’ve considered selling, the Pentax 18-135 and the Sigma 10-20 f3.5. Both have been made theoretically redundant by more recent purchases. For this thread, I’ll only post the former’s pics.

Top: I focused on her tools, an iPhone with an inexpensive wide angle attachment and her improvised “Gene Rayburn” microphone made out of a piece of copper tubing spray painted black. In this photo she is giving shout outs to viewers of significance like the wife of the president of the Kentucky State Senate. This photo is mainly for Tara’s self-promotional use.

Bottom: Tiny Markwell, founder of Louisville’s Forgotten, receives an embrace from Tara.

You shouldn't sell the 18-135 - there are many scenarios where that is the only lens required.

18-135 is a keeper

18-135 wont sell for much and there are many occasions in which it will be the most valuable lens: very compact, built like a tank, weather resistant, fast focusing, very sharp in the center, unmatched focal range from wide angle to true tele.
There are better lenses but none as versatile.

I have to admit, that since I bought my 24-70mm 2.8 I haven't touched my 18-135, which is a shame as it's such a versatile lens.

Philip
I've bought this lens twice now since I lost one once in the snow.
Speaking of snow, I managed to come back with all my gear after some great powder skiing over the weekend at Crested Butte.

Alright, alright, alright...

I知 convinced. I値l keep it! AND I may see if I can buy back the K10D I sold to my neighbor. AND I found an ME Super on Craigslist with five (5!) lenses from 28mm to 500mm for $150. At least one of them has to be worthwhile.

This sundown shot was taken with the K-3 and the 18-135 at Christmastime from a hill overlooking the Rio Grande river valley in Las Cruces, NM. It's actually a crop from a larger, wider picture so as to appropriately place the mountain at the left.

I'm going to be the contrarian. I love my 18-135. I do. But if you love your 16-85 and rarely use the 18-135 - sell it to someone who will use it. Don't make that poor lens be a shelf queen.

Yeah, don't let us bully you John. Both good shots in your last post but you could have got either with the 16-85 (albeit the second one taken at 100mm would have needed to be shot at 85mm).

I was being hyperbolic. I don’t feel bullied. If I really wanted to ditch the 18-135, it would’ve been gone by now. I do love my 16-85 and have absolute confidence in it to deliver the goods when shooting for someone else. If I’m using it I feel compelled to bring a second body with a complimentary lens. It’s on the K-3ii (with battery grip) and a telephoto or UWA zoom is on the K70. In essence, it with the K3ii is my “work combo.”

Because of the goofy weather here and my aversion to going out in the cold and damp just for fun, (I will go out for a short time with the Puppy Pack Adventures but not to do much photography. I think I’m less WR than most of my gear.)

I’ve been doing an event or two but little walk about photography where the 18-135 on the K70 really shines. I also have a cache of Ltd primes that have seen little action, too.
