I was taught that too but things have changed. DSLR manufacturers have gone to 12% gray in their light meters. 12% vs 18% gray.

Interesting reading... I work in the "colour" field and often get asked for studio grey for galleries, photo studios, etc. I'll be sticking to 18% grey, but will have to keep that in the back of my mind. People are shocked at how dark it is usually, and 12% would be more so.

As much as I'm looking foward to a bag full of limiteds, sometimes it's nice to keep the old swiss army knife lens around. Glad this was in the car so I didn't have to get any closer than I was to these girls eating breakfast!

Snow Riders by eagle94vt

Excellent moose shot Skierd. A small group of us came across a clearing here in VT while backcountry skiing - a clearing full of moose beds and tracks criss crossing the small clearing like I've never seen. I am sure we were being watched.

The portraits of the kids were perfect uses for this lens at >100mm--center sharp; soft edges isolate the subject.

Here is another shot at 135mm. This is a serious crop. 135 is a little short for birding, especially with wrens, but the 18-135 held its own.

The DA 18-135 was very capable in one of our many recent snowstorms! It's my only WR lens, so it's what I have for extreme weather. Although I'm thinking about that HD 18-50 RE right now too!

Check out some others in my photostream here.

All of these photos look great. I guess it is proof that you can't take lens reviews to seriously, or not being critically technical is a blessing. I just read the Photozone.de review of this lens and, according to their findings, the lens is a disappointment. I am sure not seeing that.

Some stuff from Mumbai. Not for pixelpeeping, but liked the colour rendering + overall performance of the lense in street photography.

Scientific tests are great for scientists and measurebating on online forums, getting blog hits, etc, but are of limited value for photographers.

everything is relative

NO lens will fit ALL needs. It is why we use interchangeable lens cameras. Right? The 18-135 is a great lens for many needs.

It is still a good idea to pay attention to those critical reviews, because knowing where the lens' strengths and weaknesses are, a good photographer will use a lens where it best fits the needs of the image in front of you - or at a minimum avoid situations that play to a lens' weaknesses.

Personally, I keep my 18-135 mounted, and switch to my other lenses as the need dictates.
