Originally posted by AlexBW That looks fun, and nice photos! Was this in Colorado? What elevation do you need to go for good snow there this time of the year?
Thanks! Yes, this is in Gunnison County, it's a peak in Taylor Park below Cottonwood Pass called Park Cone. There was snow from about 9500' up. The route is about 2400' vertical with the top half being nice fresh powder (that fell the night before) on a consolidated spring base. Below that it turns to corn and got a little slushy right at the bottom by the Taylor River.
This was North facing and the stuff across the valley facing south was completely melted out so the aspect matters a lot at this elevation and time of year. In a couple of weeks some roads will open that allow us to ski some if the iconic 14ers in the San Juan range which will hold at least some snow all summer. When it opens in the spring there's a nice 3000' zone up to the summits that is usually good spring skiing.
