I'm eternally grateful to you for the recommendation Norm. And your portfolio is always inspiring.

Another forest walk. Errinundra National Park. Remote and special.

Street-ish photos

It's not exactly a discreet setup but I usually regret it if I have a different lens on the K-3 while I'm wandering around getting people shots. It just creates so many options.

Not really a street shot, but handheld (with my elbows braced on the passageway wall) from in front of my apartment looking down on the nearby corner. 135mm, 0.4 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400

Life's a festival

Went to our local Okinawan Festival this weekend but the lines were so long for everything (especially for food, sadly) that I didn't get many pictures of things Okinawan. I brought my Pentax-M 50mm f/1.4 along with the 18-135mm, but never took it out of my pocket.

This is from the restaurant where we wound up when we couldn't get any food at the festival. It's right across the street from a jetty I sometimes stop at to get pictures of kids jumping into the swells. I really liked the film-strip effect created by the little rail along the bottom of the windows.

Couldn't resist getting a shot of a photographer getting a shot of a photographer setting up on the bandstand at the park where the festival is held.

Hi all!

Within 2 months I'm buying my new K5! I would really love to be convinced of the 18-135 because of its lovely versatility, but I can't find more than a few real good photo's made with it (for example if you compare this with the Flickr group of the Tammy 17-50 which is also a possibility).

Soo, if you guys would be so kind to post al you're awesome 18-135 shots here I would be most grateful
You cannot compare a fast 17-50 transtandard zoom and a 18-135 superzoom lens.
They are different tools designed for different uses.

I dont have the Tamron 17-50, but I have both the DA 17-70 f4 and the DA 18-135. The 17-70 has better IQ, is sharper across the frame, especially wide open, and starts a tad wider. But if I need longer than 70, the DA18-135 does the job, whereas with the 17-70 I need to crop a lot or carry another lens and change on the fly. The 17-70 is also noticeably bigger and heavier.

Hence, the 18-135 is the lens I will take with me when traveling, hiking, or when I dont know what kind of scene I will shoot. I will mount the 17-70 when I feel I wont need the 70-135 range, and wont mind the extra bulk to get a little better IQ.

If I had a fast f2.8 17-50 zoom, I would use it for low light shots, or to blur the backgrounds: as I dont have it, I use my limited primes for that. But in any case it wouldnt replace my DA 18-135.

Lots of DA 18-135 full size samples in my flickr gallery.

A few of them just below to show the versatility:

And a sample of the kind of colour rendering for which I do prefer the DA 17-70:

I'm at Dulles on my home from Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I brought the 18-135 for its versatility, light weight, and weather sealing. Seemed to work out great!
This is rising out of the jungle on the beautiful and uncrowded (for the first two days) Umbwe route. We summited four days later. Great adventure!

Yes indeed - that's at the Royal Hawaiian, where we stayed at the time.

Candles

I took this shot of some candles at my granddaughter's wedding in Santa Fe, NM this weekend. I was struck by the composition. The 18-135 is way versatile, and it was my only lens at the wedding.
