Was waiting for a friend outside the municipal building in downtown Honolulu when this photogenic little troupe sat down on the bench opposite me.

Organ Mountains in New Mexico

This is a shot of the rugged Organ Mountains, near Las Cruces, New Mexico. My maternal grandfather once prospected these mountains around the turn of the 20th Century. I took the picture shortly after dawn to emphasize the mountains' shadows.

The weather here has been grey and miserable while off work and a cold has not helped, so I'm dropping some older photos off. This is still my most used lens.

Hi all,

I might have a chance to buy a used copy of this lens at a good price but I suspect it doesn't have the hood. It looks like there are no third parties manufacturing replacement hoods so that would leave me three options:

1. Use it without any hood
2. Pay for a genuine one, which costs far more than a simple piece of plastic has any right to
3. Use a collapsable 62mm rubber hood

So I wanted to ask if anyone here has any experience of using this lens without the hood - how is it with regards to image quality?

Of course, if anyone has any links to third-party or cheap genuine Pentax hoods for this lens then that would be more than welcome too.

Many thanks

I've always used it with the hood. Flare resistance is good, but I think you need a hood.

Haven't seen any cheap genuine hoods or knock-offs. That leaves generic 62mm hoods. Some people prefer screw-in rubber ones, but personally I find it a nuisance to screw the hood on for each use. To replace the token hood on my DA 20-40 I got a Neewer brand plastic tulip-shaped one that is reversible. You screw a supplied mounting ring into the filter thread and the hood clips securely into the ring, either forward or reversed. The only criticism I'd make of the Neewer one is that it doesn't have a front thread to put a filter on; the filter has to go between the lens and the mounting ring. If you can find one of this style that has a front thread, it would be ideal.

K-3 and 18-135 + built-in flash

Every time I ask something of this little gem of a lens, it delivers. Standing atop a lookout in very harsh light did not prevent me from getting a " keeper " shot of my wife.

Peter, your wife will be pleased that she's a "keeper".

Lovely shot. Best wishes to you and yours for the New Year.
