The 18-135's versatility paid off here, though I did wish I had had brought along something faster, but that would have meant at least a 2 lens kit, and fiddling with lens changes in between and missing some shots then... A second camera would do the trick as well, but nothing beats the neat little package of one camera with the 18-135 for compactness and quality.

In the first image you can totally see how much softness there is towards the edges, and how that softness actually improves your ability to focus on the sharpness, and in that way increase the effectiveness of the image. You don't have this effect with an edge sharp lens.

I don't mean to disagree in general, but I can't quite see it in the first pic, since all the edges are way out of the focal plane and any softness elsewhere may have been introduced by me handholding the camera above people's heads in front of me (though her face is rather sharp) or the performer moving (her arms) a little too much for the shutter speed of 1/200 s at 135mm.

Lovely shots. I suspect that the last one, with the jacaranda tree, is mostly a modern extension built to blend in.

Yes, it does look that way but I'm not so sure. I have seen descriptions of it as a sandstone house. Sure, part of it is sandstone but it looks very different from the front (which you can't see from my vantage point on a bridge).
Do a Google search on "figtree house hunters hill" and check it out for yourself.

Especially between 24mm and 36mm. I searched my library for photos that I took at 28mm like you did and many of my favourites with this lens turned up in the results.

Today I got to do something I have wanted to do for some time - go on a tour of our local lighthouse and see the view from the balcony. And I was not disappointed. This is Norah Head Lighthouse...
And it will be 116 years old on November 15, 2019. It is still a functioning lighthouse (now totally automated except for the guy who has to change the light globes).
