Super takumar vs s.m.c. takumar lens

What's difference between Pentax for super takuma and s.m.c. lens

[The following is all AFAIK.] The difference is in the coatings. Pre-Super-Tak lenses (Auto-Tak, Tele-Tak, Macro-Tak, etc) have 'primitive' coatings, as do bayonet-mount Tak-A and Tak-F and Takumar Bayonet lenses. The Super-Taks used an early super-multi-coated formula, which evolved into S-M-C Taks and then the SMC Taks. Since the introduction of PK-bayonet mounts with the Pentax SMC (K-series) lenses, all Pentax lenses have ever-evolving SMC coatings (sorry for the redundancy) to counter flare and increase light transmission.

Dept of Redundancy Dept: Saying "SMC coatings" is like saying "the La Brea Tar pits" but it can't be helped.

Aside from the coatings optical formulas changed quite a bit in some cases.

Just look at the early super tak 50/1.4 8 element vs all later 50/1.4 lenses which use 7.

Although coatings are the most identifyable change, they are not the only change in a lot of cases

Yes, some significant optics changes occurred too, and a study of the lens database here will illustrate those different formulas. But I'll argue that coatings are the major distinction between Super-Tak and SMC-Tak. Just updating the pixie dust...

also, depending on what year the lens was actually introduced, it may or may not have the coupling necessary for open-aperture metering. some S-M-C lenses do, and some do not. versus all the SMC lenses having this. but for the most part, the difference between Super and S-M-C, is in fact the coatings.

Don't forget the difference in build. The S-M-C lenses have knurled metal focus rings. SMC lenses have a rubberized grip.

Long story short: don't worry about the difference between super and SMC takumars. worry about getting a good copy (4/4 for me - 1 teletak, 1 super, 2 SMC)

expanding the story
coatings may or may not be different between them. I've read that coatings were a running change so the super takumar line could have been updated to the SMC line early. Remember that the lens is 40 years old so you have to be careful with flare regardless.
very few of us care about the electrical contacts since we're not using them on film cameras
a few S-M-C lenses have the rubberized grip similar to the K series - I don't really want these although there isn't a logical reason why
