I'm definitely a fan of A series lenses, my 50mm SMC Pentax A 1.4 is great. It's the only one I have, but if I run across a chance to grab another one I won't even think twice about it. Here's a shot taken with it using my binocular lens macro rig in natural daylight.

I believe that doesn't hold true for the A 35-105mm
I said "tend to be", not "are". The Vivitar-Komine Series 1 Version 1 70-210/3.5 is an excellent example. Both the V70-210 and the A35-105 are just 3:1, not longer-range like my Tokina SD 35-200/4-5.6 at around 6:1.

Of course, crappy shorter-range zooms exist too. I suffered the M40-80/2.8-4 (2:1) and A28-80/3.5-4.5 (2.8:1), and I still suffer the A35-80/4-5.6 (2.3:1). I've heard that some Nikkor 39-80 was a real turd.

At the other end, the DA18-250/3.5-6.3 at 14:1 is much better than might be expected. Yes, it's better than that Tokina SD 35-200 even with over twice the focal range. So these are tendencies, not rules.

To the person that opened this thread, have you considered getting a K-01 and trying out focus peaking? If the K-01 really doesn't rock your boat, you can probably just wait for the K-5 replacement, that should include this feature. It's said to make manual focus a joy, being fast and easy. I get my K-01 tomorrow, so I don't speak from experience, but the K-01 are raving about it. Seem to be a much better option to exchange body, than to have to let go of such precious lenses.

Thanks. Not by best shot by any means, maybe I should have looked for a better one, but that A series 50mm is the one I usually grab for macros, landscapes, etc because it just gets the best clarity and detail of any lens I have...I'd love to get a couple more in other focal lengths.

The A series 50mm f1.4 has been mentioned in this thread, IMO this has got to be the best value "standard" lens available at present. Prices have dropped recently (in the UK at least), last year it was fairly common to see them at the 150 mark (approx double the price of the 1.7) - this year I have seen several at under 100. I know the 1.7 is very highly regarded, and they are still holding their price, yet that extra half(ish) stop makes a big difference and I find it better quality overall. Great for low light photography, superb for portraits, and when you add an extension tube and it is great for macro.

The SMC-A 50mm f1.4 also has 8 aperture blades to the f1.7 6 blades. I find the SMC-A 50mm f1.4 as a very excellent portrait lens. As for macro the SMC-A 50mm f2.8 macro lens is really stellar.
