Pentax could easily position itself as the "Apple" of digital cameras. The company has a great heritage building unique photographic products. Effective marketing could position the Pentax brand as an exciting alternative to Canikon, Sony, etc.

WRT the Big Box strategy, note that Best Buy is closing 50 stores to focus on smaller, more nimble locations focused on phones and tablets. Maybe Ricoh knows what they are doing.

Your positivity is starting to rub off. Thank you for that.

Having invested some coin in K-mount products I'm excited to see what Ricoh has in store for us. My wife and I love their gear and "think different" philosophy. I just think some people (myself included) will be hesitant to spend even more money on glass with suspect SDM mechanisms.
At a point PRI will be well advised to respond to your (and our) concerns. I imagine that is on their list. And the incoming from joe.penn is one of the hazards.

I'm not a member of the photographer street community. I read a lot of investment stuff and have for 35 years. Ricoh seems to be doing all the things a company does when it invests for growth, not when it buys for running out the cash or peeling off the parts.

But if someone with street knowledge knows better, do tell.

Google "pentax sdm" and take note of what you see on the first page. Do the same for "sigma hsm" and "canon usm".

My findings suggest an engineering debacle for SDM.
say what you wish, I bought my DA*16-50 in the summer of 2007 and it has been my default lens of choice since that time It is in the forum
database as the 8th oldest lens of that model (out of a 112 listed.) To this day I remain a happy satisfied user of this lens.

Well, it's April and Pentax lenses prices have now changed at B&H:

Yesterday:
DA*16-50mm f/2.8.....$ 799
DA*50-135mm f/2.8...$ 849
DA*60-250mm f/4.0...$1,249

Today:
DA*16-50mm f/2.8.....$1,500
DA*50-135mm f/2.8...$1,600
DA*60-250mm f/4.0...$2,000

How many of you are willing to order this week and pay nearly double what other people paid last week for the same item? And seriously, $1,500-1,600 for lenses with inexpensive, slow, old-style AF micro-motors instead of modern USM ring-type motors? No thanks!

I sure hope this pricing is an April Fool joke. I was thinking of the DA Limited 40 mm f 2.8 pancake. At B&H sitting in the cart, it went from $340 to $500 while I slept on it! :-( Guess that decides it.

Seriously, since when does a company bump prices up 30% across the board overnight? This makes some of Pentax's high end offerings significantly more expensive than that of Canon/Nikon. $900 for our 12-24 vs $820 for Canon's 10-24, $2000 for our 60-250 vs $1350 for their 70-200 IS Mk1, $1200 for our DA200 vs $800 for theirs. One of Pentax's perks was high end glass at slightly more affordable prices. Perhaps they could have raised prices on their Limited line, as those lenses are uniquely Pentax. But when Pentax charges more for these standard lenses, that's a bold and risky move. But who are we to judge their strategy? Companies usually know best about their market situation. Then again, they often don't.

FYI: They haven't set the prices yet, which should happen in the next couple of days if not sooner - the prices that are shown on B&H are default SRP prices, the retail prices have not yet been set...

By the way, the FA Limited prices are the same, making them look like a huge bargain in comparison with the DA limiteds. Hmmm...500 for a DA40 or 560 for a FA43.....

Either Pentax is going to lower their MSRP on the DA lenses or bump up the FA prices very soon.

These aren't the Unilateral Prices. These are the old MSRP prices. Today is not a business day.

The K-5 is showing $1,199 on the Pentax Webstore. That should be a hint of what is to come. In all of Adam's posts on the $300 Instant Rebate he stated April 1st the K-5 would rise to $1,099 and stay there. Allowing B&H and Adorama a smaller amount of price leeway ($100 vs. the Webstore) is the point of Universal Pricing.

Good Grief people. If $499.95 is the real price for a DA40/2,8 Ltd. I'll sell anyone my February 7th 2012 copy for $469.95 shipped (and make $100).

And we can talk about my MF lenses when that's done.

Sadly, Pentax's QC, distribution network and support network do not merit the lens price increases.

Monochrome, that's a good point, I did not realize that the B&H et al prices are the current MSRP's.
