How does it sit with people that Pentax is poised to raise pricing yet hasn't addressed SDM quality concerns?

Google "pentax sdm" and take note of what you see on the first page. Do the same for "sigma hsm" and "canon usm".

My findings suggest an engineering debacle for SDM.

Debacle? IMHO a rather harsh choice of words, that.

This is another step in Ricoh's plan to expand the reach and market share of the Pentax brand. We cannot on the one hand complain that Pentax USA does nothing, gives horrible service and doesn't support local retailers, and on the other hand complain when Pentax Ricoh Imaging USA advertises for a trade-show and dealer support Rep. and begins to install dealer-support pricing, You can have one or the other. You can't have both.

And you can't have a FF camera without pro local support and service. Add two and Two.

Ricoh has a plan.

Adam's poll suggests the problem hasn't been resolved.

? I thought most of it was because a plastic part in the 16-50 and the 50-135 weren't glued on properly?
Some people have also had problems w/ the 60-250, but mine has been ok so far.
Still, it's not a real ring motor...just a high frequency micromotor AFAIK...

No disrespect intended - but we're looking at the past. Look at Ricoh. What are they doing differenty? At some point we'll be convinced that Ricoh is executing thier plan. While we would certainly like to see an announcement or an explanation or some schematics of a change, maybe that's farther down the list of repoutation enhancements than TODAY.

I see a bunch of reviews of new SDM lenses, some Amazon links and a few PF posts from 2009 through October, 2011 - about six months ago.

What do you see?

Ricoh has a plan. It is unfolding. 2012 is a "marshalling" year (as in, "Marshall your Resources"). 2013 is a "delivery" year (as in, "Prove it by Delivering on the Plan.")

WRT the Big Box strategy, note that Best Buy is closing 50 stores to focus on smaller, more nimble locations focused on phones and tablets. Maybe Ricoh knows what they are doing.

Beer or KoolAid? (Of course, if it is KoolAid, who is Jim Jones?)

I see Google crawls of complaints about failed SDM motors in the past. Many of them brought to the top of Google spider crawls by our own hits on this website.

But there's no reason to disagree about it - they happened. The question is should we beat a dead horse or encourage PRI to implement their plan?

Your positivity is starting to rub off. Thank you for that.

Having invested some coin in K-mount products I'm excited to see what Ricoh has in store for us. My wife and I love their gear and "think different" philosophy. I just think some people (myself included) will be hesitant to spend even more money on glass with suspect SDM mechanisms.
