my foul-weather pair

Sorta surprised me too.. but adding the rubber band really did the trick.

The WR kit is easy enough to explain. The 50-200WR or 18-135 makes the most sense, but my XR has a whole lot going for it: same 52mm filters as the 18-55, internal zoom, built-in shade, and excellent image quality with no chromatism (which my copy of the 18-135 was full of). The one easy entry point for water is at the base of the focus ring, but the rubber band fits snugly and is just right for allowing infinity focus when it makes contact. Pretty ugly as it stands though time to get out the black paint - better yet chartreuse, to match the focus letters!

Large 'O rings' can be had from industrial - hydraulic engineering suppliers. I use one right at the back of the lens butted up to the body, very lightly smeared with petroleum jelly ( I mean 'lightly smeared' - ) to keep rain out.. The O rings are thicker than elastic bands, the ones I use are about 2mm dia.
