Well, I bought another copy and send straight to Pentax for calibration. I did some brief shooting test and the CA @ wide open was a joke, and also it was softer in the centre than the first copy wide open. I need miracles when the body and lenses return 1 month's time........ :P

If it doesn't cost you anything to try new copies, definitely do it, its an expensive lens get the most for what you paid for.

However, you say you need low light capabilities have you thought about getting a flash? Most lenses tend to be soft wide open compared to how sharp they are stopped down.

I wish you best of luck with the calibration @service center. I'm having the focus calibrated on my superprogram right now.

what is what? the superprogram? a 30 years old Pentax SLR, that's it. But it was a badass camera these days, it won some camera of the year award and had pretty advanced features at that time.

You're not really meant to use zooms at their extremes, 16mm @ f2.8 is an an example of an extreme. For that matter even limited primes are not at their best wide open. I wouldn't dream of using 16mm @ less than f4 Hey even the DA15 Limited only goes down to f4 and even that is not a good use of the DA15. i usually use the 16-50 @ f5.6 and its given me great shots at that aperture.

I can't think of a reason to use 16mm @ f2.8, perhaps someone more skilled can enlighten.

I love my 16-50, its my number one travel lens. With a weather sealed body, its a hassle free travel combination and produces great results every time. I suppose the Tamron and Sigma equivalents are better optically, however, the ability to just leave it on a weather sealed body while travelling, get 95% of your travel shots with it and never have to worry about dust or moisture is priceless. Anyway, I always feel a bit dirty with a Tamron or Sigma on my Pentax, ewwww! Sorry, I am a bit of a Pentax snob! It does look gorgeous the 16-50, always get appreciative comments about it when I carry it.

Its been decades since I went to a night club, but in the days (nights) that I did, the last thing I would have thought of carrying to a night club is an SLR! The bouncers let you in with one, these days? Don't you find it getting in the way of having a good time?

I bought the DA14/2,8 and I'm using it wide open quite frequently. Mainly for reportage purpose.

Great idea that would never have occurred to me - Fast aperture, great depth of field, wide coverage. Thanks!

I bought the lens for high shutter speed work, Around 1/3000. f2.8 will help to bring down the ISO. No I don't need edge to edge sharpness, but decent centre sharpness and less CA is all I wish for after paying USD 1150 for Pentax top of the range zoom.

@lightbulb: Have you read this: DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Image Quality: Sharpness - PentaxForums.com

From my experience owning it for about 4 years, its not really suitable for the purpose you have in mind.
