Great idea that would never have occurred to me - Fast aperture, great depth of field, wide coverage. Thanks!
Actually it is not only this, I also like to use DA14 for close-ups:

@lightbulb: Have you read this: DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Image Quality: Sharpness - PentaxForums.com

From my experience owning it for about 4 years, its not really suitable for the purpose you have in mind.
You are right, Pentax only leads in pricing in this shootout!

Pentax leads in the feel IMHO. The 16-50 feels very nice to shoot with, and I find that much more important than the better optics of the other two. It's no slouch optically either, and it's the only weather sealed option.

I was very tempted by the Sigma, but there's just something I felt it was lacking in comparison. It is a shame the 16-50 is so expensive, but it definitely feels like it's worth it, and I've never thought for a second it's not sharp enough, even wide open at the corners at 16mm.

Hopefully Tamron will release a good WR version of their 17-50 in the future with better ergonomics. But judging by the price of their new 24-70 2.8, weather sealing comes at a mahoosive price.

While the corners may not be that good at 16mm f2.8, the center performance is excellent, nevertheless. I am very pleased with the colours and microcontrast of the lens, once you are addicted to Pentax colours nothing else will do. Resolution isn't everything. A lot of people including myself are happy with the lens as can be evidenced in 16-50 club thread. However, as the OP insists on shooting at 16mm f2.8 perhaps a DA14 f2.8 would be more suitable for his shooting style.
