Yup, that's a pretty good price, especially considering the recent retail price increase in the US.

New or used ?

Which is it, since you didn't specify ... I assume that the 40 is used ... J

Even before the price hike, $250 for a used one is a steal.

Personally, I have found that this lens is a lovely performer wide open for half body portraits. Some of my favorite photos that I have taken were shot with it. And $250 in good condition is a great price IMO.

If you've never used a limited lens, you'll be surprised at their image qualities.
40ltd is sharp from corner to corner a most apertures, and its bokeh, simply marvelous.
As far as a 40mm lens goes, I think it's one of the finest.

i have a 50mm F1.7 in my closet (M series) that i have not used yet (only on my Pentax MX). will buying this 40mm be a duplication of that lens ? should i just stick to my 50mm ???

No, its not a duplication. The 40 has autofocus, is optimized for digital, and is a limited lens with higher standards across the board over your M50/1.7.

Bonjour,

The AF plus the digital optimization are a big plus ... This is a lens that I am considering based on its great performance and small size, etc. I have an A 50/1.7 and also fear for some "overlap" ... but, I think that I'll get past that obstacle one of these days ... plus I'm waiting to see the performance of the new DA 50 f1.8 ... if it's on the same level as the DA 35 f2.5, I'm going to buy it in order to have a "fast" AF fifty ... the DA 40 is only a f2.8 ... but, it's still a "limited" ... decisions, decisions.

I had 35mm 2.4z fa501.4 and 50 a-1.7.
Even so, my first reaction to 40ltd's images were, "wow".
small size was one of the biggest selling point as well.

I got rid of 35 and 50 because of the 40ltd, but now I have 17-50 and 50-135 + bunch of old primes in 50-58mm range, so I don't use the 40 often unless going on a trip.

40 is an amazing lens. On my camera 2-3x more often than any other lens. $300-$325 seems like the typical good price on here and the 'bay. So it's a steal.
