Well, the ~ $700 +/- has been my level of pain. The DA 12-24/f4 - I missed the rebates several years ago, and there were few found on the Marketplace back then, so acquired new. The other one (yes two so far) was just very recently - a Zeiss 25/f2.8 Distagon ZK, now discontinued - new in box, old new stock. All the other stores had it for almost double the price, and I missed the one on the Marketplace a couple of months ago.....

For me it is so far 200€ (~260$). There are actually three in this place, including Tamron 17-50/2.8, Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 and Sigma 50/1.4. I will break that easily in the near future though as I'm looking for fast telephoto and superzoom reaching to 500mm or some combination to meet these needs (maybe sigma 100-300/4 + 1.4x TC).

I liked the 55-300 a lot. I sold it after I got the 300.

BTW, what is the use of this thread?
I suppose a measure of the buying power of the established Pentax market?

I would be interested in a poll of "What percentage of shots do you take with a lens that is no longer manufactured?" So many times the volume of legacy lenses is given as a reason for adopting Pentax, I've wondered how often that is actually followed-up on.

That would certainly be an interesting poll.
In my case, except for a DA Limited 15/35/70 trio and a Tamron 17-50/2.8 A16P,
none of the lenses I use regularly are currently being manufactured
(at least in K-mount), so the percentage would be around 75..

I agree that would be interesting, my brother more or less sold me on the idea of buying pentax for legacy lenses. But he has never bought one and the first thing I did after buying my K7 with kit lens was go on ebay and snipe a good deal on a M 50mm f1.7

Not to say I only buy old stuff tho. To stay somewhat on topic my most expensive lens was a FA 77mm limited .

I'd be interested in that too. For me it would probably be 99%. The only current lens I have is the kit and I never use it. It would be interesting to see if people that are in lower cost groups tend to use legacy glass too. There are some pretty good lenses out there including plenty of AF ones that can be gotten for very little compared to a similar new lens. Not all are necessarily that old either but if a newer model or a designed for digital model comes out?

A$1200 or thereabouts in 2006 for a F*300/4.5, worth every cent of it, in retrospect. The A$ was only about 72 US cents then, I paid the equivalent of US$1000 for a DA*16-50 in Singapore in Dec 2007, which has later turned out to be my most used lens, so worth every cent as well. These two lenses are the ones I always pack when travelling, so money well spent.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

This thing sold before ebay could even get the watch list to me!

I try to keep my lenses $1100 and under. but I have some as low as $49

That is, perhaps, the least important reason from my standpoint to go with Pentax. I have found that I really value auto focus and will pay for it -- a lot; whereas lenses without autofocus just sit in my cabinet collecting dust.

I have not gone over 1000 dollars for a lens purchase, but many of my lenses were purchased awhile ago when lens prices were a lot lower than they are now. I also don't shoot telephoto much (needs are completely satisfied with DA 55-300) and that seems to be where the highest priced lenses are at.

My most expensive is my most recent (this week): SMC Pentax DA 18-135 for about USD 620 (European price level, you know).

And I agree, it would be an interesting poll
I have 4 AF lenses of which the SMC Pentax-FA 28-80 isn't produced any more. And then I have 12 older K-mount MF lenses and 3 Takumars. So by volume, 85% of my lenses are no longer manufactured and I estimate the number of my shots actually taken with these to be some 75%+

YES, the Pentax backward compatibility IS important to me!
