Highly unlikely, unless your filter is soiled. The lens may need to be looked at by your local repair service.

Well, after shooting this weekend I'm leaning towards concluding that the lens is fine and it is just user error. Although, it does seem to be easier to fool in tricky lighting situations than the kit lens.
