M 50mm f/1.7 versus F 50mm f/1.7

Hi everyone...

Does anybody own both the M 50mm f/1.7 and the F 50mm f/1.7, that they could compare the IQ between the two lenses?

Basically my question is which lens is better IQ-wise (ignoring manual focus versus AF)...

Thanks a bunch!
Ben

I've got an A 50 f1.7 and it's a great lens. However, I'm also interested to see if there's a difference between 30 year old glass and the new stuff.

Regards

I had the M, the A, and the F 50mm 1.7--they are nearly identical. Same optical formula, so sharpness is the same, but the tonality of colors seems to be a bit different. I prefer the rendering of the M, but that of the F is a close second. (The M's colors are a tad punchier IMO.) The A often gives a kind of brownish cast of which I'n not fond.

I owned both the M and the FA (which again is the same optic); I couldn't notice any real difference. In the end I sold the FA simply because it had a higher value on the market.

I cant say about the fa version but I have the A 50 and the M 50 they are both really good lenses. Nice and sharp and good colours. I keep the M on my ME super and use the A on my K200.

I've got both lenses and I like the M50/1.7 better but they're both good, I just prefer the out of camera image on the M.

Awhile back, I did an informal comparison shot with the K55/1.8, K50/1.4, M50/1.7, and F50/1.7
I setup my tripod and took a series of shot using each lens at a range of aperture values.
I used my K10D with the same WB and JPEG settings for all shots.
For focusing, I used manual focus on all lenses and for the first shot with each lens, I took a series of photos and adjusted focus until I got best focus, then deleted the focus test shot and the shot a series only adjusting aperture and manually adjusting shutter speeds.

My conclusion, it was nearly impossible to tell any difference in sharpness between all 4 lenses, K50/1.4 has best bokeh when stopped down because of having 8 blades. I couldn't find anything that proved the 3 1.7 lenses were any sharper wide open than the K50/1.4 and if anything, the K50 was slightly better stopped down.

Here are the 100% crops from the M50/1.7 and F50/1.7 both wide open.

Interesting comparison, Swift. The M50/1.7 actually looks just a touch sharper (though barely noticeable) to my eye. Look at the texture of the pain on the right cheekbone, for instance.

Thanks for posting.
