Which is Top of Line - * or LTD

I have always thought that the LTDs were the top of the line in IQ. The *s are more for professional use lenses - heavy duty construction able to take the hard knocks and wear and tear resulting from heavy use.

Originally, there was only * lenses even back in the M series (almost 3 decades ago). They represent some special lenses like Canon L. The first LIMITED lens FA43/1.9 made its first appearance in 1997. Unlike other AF lenses, it was built like the good old full metal M lenses, plus AE & AF. Both * & LIMITED are high quality lenses, but * are bulky like Canon L, while LIMITED are tiny jewels more like Leica M lenses (but Leica lenses have brass constructions which are heavier & tougher than aluminium alloy being used in all Japanese metal lenses).
