medium-tele zoom with some substance?

okay. i'm coming to pentax, from old Minolta gear, and i've been looking at the 50-300 f/4+ range lenses that are available, and.. it seems like most are small, lightweight lenses, nothing of real meatiness, lol. what i'm looking for is something similar to the minolta 70-210/f4, or the old (push/pull) sigma 75-300 in weight, feel, and size. is there a lens for pentax in this range that is similar? it just feels funny to have a tele lens that's about the same size as the 18-55 kit, reach 300mm, lol

so does this mean there's nothing comparable? or do people just think it's backwards thinking to want a bigger lens than what's out there?

I don't think there is "nothing available" jsut an issue that the old nice full frame fast lenses are scarce.

Sigma has a couple of zooms that get out to 300mm F4, and also 200mm F2.8 but the latter is discontinued for the moment.

There is also some used pentax glass available such as 300mm F4 lenses,

Pentax has a new 300mm F4 in the roadmap but not available yet. In fact for many who don't have legacy glass lack of new lenses is a bit of a problem.

Additionally there are always the sigma zooms and tamron zooms that go out to 400 and 500 mm, and reasonably fast at that focal lentgh.

If you are coming from olympus, and please take no offence, I assume you are used to paying a lot for lenses. You could look at the sigma 300 F2.8 for example B&H have it listed as available in autofocus K mount at $2600

I have seen some very good pictures taken with the sigma 100-300 f4 (notice the f4, there is another model that it is not as good as this one). I dont know if it is avalaible now.

The DA* 50-135mm is fairly meaty, and if you put the hood on, it get's EXTRA meaty

There is also the new Tamron 70-200/2.8 to consider. If this is anything close to the 28-75, it will give a lot of these slower (f4) lenses stiff competition!

note when you add a 1.5X TC to get it out to 300 mm it will be the same speed as a 100-300 F4.
