read the OP
those test shots don't count.

I believe the DA*60-250 was indeed patented as FF but it was never marketed as such.

Yes, and the OP listed some DA* lenses. Like it or not, the test shots thread is there. Besides, The DA* 55/1.4 SDM would work. Furthermore, it isn't like Pentax would have to start from scratch to fill out a lens lineup. On top of that, m4/3 is just now getting a basic line up with 2 or 3 manufactures so Pentax is well ahead of them in available lenses. The FA 50/1.4 is still available and the 35/2 is in some markets.

My inclusion of those lenses is based upon the patents listing both of them as full-frame lenses, and in the case of the 300, the obvious-ness of the ff compatibility.

If you read the OP you'll notice I said that a 'normal' retailer had to carry them (BH/Adorama/Amazon). They were NOT supposed to be special order items, although the T&S lenses might stretch that definition a bit.

With the recent pricing policies, are there any "normal" retailers left?

Then you should list the DA*200 as well and the DA40

Yes normal retailers, i know a Dutch store that carries the FA J 75mm-300mm or are we only looking at US stores, if so you need to say so.

Once again read the rules the OP has laid out.... Is it that hard to read? *sighs*

You should be concerned with the forum rules this much regarding rudeness, insulting posts, persoan attacks and inflammatory posts.

This thread is supposed to be for fun and interest. This thread is essentially in part for the discussion of what's immediately available if there was a Pentax ff dSLR. There isn't and has never been one in production. So technically any mention by Pentax regarding full frame is in reference to film bodies.

Here is a link to the forum rules.

They have never been described by Pentax, to my knowledge, as FF. The fact that the 300 performs well on FF is corroborating evidence, not primary evidence.

I wanted to avoid people saying 'well that's just YOUR opinion that the 40mm is FF'. *Pentax* has said the 300mm is full frame.

To my knowledge Pentax has never described the 200mm as FF. If you find a patent reference, etc., that's FF I'll change my tune.

It's not intended to be US only. However I'm a bit worried that, say, *one* store in the Netherlands might still have a lens for sale that was built in 1993 and never sold. I guess I'd need a bit more info than just one store carrying it. The guideline I was using is 'Does Pentax still Manufacture it'.

I could've added a few Zeiss lenses that are still on the shelf, but I didn't. If Pentax has to re-tool to produce a lens, then I don't want it to be on the list.

The DA*200 optics is the same as the FA*200, so the lens design and the patents is for FF lens.
DA40 is based or is the same as the M40 so the same reason.

OK, so this seems to come up every few days or so - for some reason there seems to be a thought that there's not a lot of pentax full-frame glass that you can buy off the shelf.

There's a a great thread here from falconeye about what Pentax DA lenses are suitable to be used on FF - but for now I'm going to limit this list to three (edit: four) rules:

1) The lens has to be currently manufactured in K-mount (no discontinued lenses)
2) The lens must have, at some point, been described as full frame by the manufacturer/retailer. Patents count.
3) Must be available from a 'normal' retailer. No special-order 50mm f/1.2.
4) Must be a 'normal' (wish I could come up with a better word) lens. This list is not intended to include special purpose lenses, like pinhole, mirror, etc., lenses. Those lenses are nice but auxiliary to a 'system'.

Pentax:

  1. FA 31mm f1.8 Limited
  2. FA 35mm f2.0
  3. FA 43mm f1.9 Limited
  4. DFA 50mm f2.8 macro
  5. FA 50mm f1.4
  6. DA 50mm f1.8 (caveat: described as FF by retailers and seems to perform as FF lens. Unknown if Pentax told retailers it was FF.)
  7. FA 77mm f1.8 Limited
  8. DFA 100mm f/2.8 macro
  9. DA* 300mm f4
  10. DA* 60-250 f4

A Honorable mention to 35mm f2.4
B Honorable mention to 40mm f2.8, with most saying it is close to full-frame performance
C Honorable mention to 55mm f1.4
D Honorable mention to 200mm f2.8? Has this ever been described as full frame?
E Future possibility for 14-28 on roadmap . Seems unlikely if reports of patent being for APS-C are true.
F Future possibility for 24-75 on roadmap
G Future possibility for 100-400 on roadmap
H Future possibility - almost certainty - of 560mm

Sigma
11. 15mm f2.8
12. 20mm f1.8
13. 24mm f1.8
14. 28mm f1.8
15. 50mm f1.4
16. 50mm f2.8 macro
17. 70mm f2.8 macro
18. 85mm f/1.4
19. 300mm f/2.8
20. 500mm f/4.5

21. 12-24 f/4.5-5.6
22. 24-70 f/2.8
23. 70-200 f/2.8
24. 70-300 f4-5.6 Macro/ 70-300 f4-5.6 APO Macro/ 70-300 f4-5.6 OS (Surely all three of these aren't still sold?)
25. 120-400 f4.5-5.6
26. 150-500 f5-6.3
27. 50-500 f/4.5-6.3

Tamron
28. 90mm f2.8Macro

(Is the 28-200mm f3.8-5.6 discontinued?)
29. 28-300mm f3.5-6.3
30. 28-75mm f2.8
31. 70-200 f2.8 'macro'
32. 70-300 f4-5.6 'Macro'

Samyang/Rokinon/Bower/Vivitar/Phoenix
33. 14mm f/2.8
34. 24mm f/1.4
35. 35mm f/1.4
36. 85mm f/1.4

Phoenix

37. 28-210 f/4.2-6.5
38. 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 (actually two, manual and autofocus)

Lensbaby
I'm not going to put these on the list. I don't know how many are actually different lenses vs. different 'packages' of the same lens. They appear to be advertised as FF.

Schneider
39. 90mm f/4.5 T/S
40. 50mm f/2.8 T/S

Zeiss/Voigtlander
Some are available but these lenses are discontinued as per Digitalis.

Toy/Pinhole Lenses:
See posts by RioRico below.

For reference, from the two major Pentax mount producers I see:

Pentax:
10 current lenses.
4 more currently described APS-C lenses work well on FF.
4 lenses on roadmap might be FF.
Primary weaknesses: Primes below 31mm, mid-range zoom (assuming the 24-75 is not FF), wide angle zoom (assuming the 14-28 is not FF). No primes between 100 and 200. Nothing above 300, or 560 hopefully soon.

Sigma: 17 current lenses
Primary weaknesses: No primes between 85 and 300. Nothing above 500.
Just sold a rare "A"35 2.0.
