Pentax-K SMC 50mm 1:1.4

I have just purchased this P/K lens on fleabay with a serial number of 1099154.

Reviews I have looked at tells me that this is the sharpest lens Pentax has ever made.

What are fellow Pentaxians thoughts on this type of lens?

Thanks,

MR.

Probably not the sharpest ever, but it's pretty darn good, especially considering its low price.

Also the bokeh you can get with this lens is wonderful. I have one...I love it.

I would say, maybe one of the sharper 50/1.4s from Pentax, but not the sharpest lens ever. Maybe you were reading about the K 50/4 Macro.
I have found the K 50/1.4 to be a lot like the SMC Takumar 50/1.4, both have very similar rendering and bokeh.

I figured that, but wasn't certain.

Yeah, the 50/1.4 did not change much through its history. Ditto for the 55/1.8. Why mess with a good thing?

Steve
I seem to remember reading that the M version was slightly different?
I had an M a few years back and didn't really like it much but that may have been partly cause I didn't really know what I was doing.
I also had a SMC Tak version that I sold last year but before I sold it I found the K version.

You may find this lens shootout interesting, as it tests out both the A50/1.4 and M50/4 Macro:

Nifty 50 Shootout : ERPhotoReview

We can probably assume that the various flavours of these lenses are optically very similar, if not identical. You'll notice that the Macro is by far the sharpest wide open, but wide open means f4, of course. If you stop the 50/1.4 down to f4, it's pretty much on a par with the Macro, also at f5.6, perhaps less so at f8.

I think that's an impressive result, especially when you consider that you get nearly as much resolution at f2.8. The results also imply that the 50/1.4 is relatively soft at f1.4, so that's worth bearing in mind when looking at your results with this lens.

Yes, the optical design did change a bit (although it remained a 7/6 construction) from K (which was the same as the SMC Tak) to M, and then it changed again from M to A (again, still 7/6).

Yep the K50/4 macro is the sharpest K series lens. The other standard 50-55mm K series lenses are about the same, depending on the aperture used.
