SMC Pentax-F 1:3.5-4.5 28-80mm Zoom

I just got this lens off ebay. It doesn't seem to be very well rated: 7.10 at the present site. So, I gave a bit of a test drive on my K-01 today. My first impression is that this is a very fine lens - perhaps it should be ratet somewhat higher.
However, maybe I was just lucky getting such a fine sample.
Please take a look at: Testing SMC Pentax-F 28-80mm Macro - a set on Flickr
Especially the car picture shows, that this lens is capable of very crisp results.

Regards
Jens

I've got an FA 28-80. You're right...they're not bad lenses. They're capable of taking some nice pics.

Pentax made a couple of different 28-80 zooms. I got the FA 28-80 (new) as a kit lens with a Z-10 more than 20 years ago, (bought it just for holidays). This was the SMC Pentax-FA 28-80mm F3.5-4.7 (the Power Zoom). I was not impressed at all. Until then I had used only Tokina zooms, and most of them had much better IQ.

I sold it long ago, but recently got the version SMC Pentax-FA 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 together with a body. With this I made just a couple of test shots, which gave the impression it is really good.

Maybe there was also much copy variation.

Which one did you get - the older one with all white lettering or the newer SMC coated one with partly red lettering ? Even the old one is not a bad lens - SMC Pentax-F 28-80mm F3.5-4.5 Reviews - F Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

It could be that. Another factor could be the inconsistency in performance at different focal lengths and apertures. Modern Photography tested the F 28-80 and found it exhibited very good resolution figures at 50mm and 80mm, better even then the popular F 30-70 and the well-regarded F 70-210 at comparable focal lengths. But it was not so good at 28mm, with corner resolution posting the lowest score of any Pentax lens Modern Photography ever tested.

The one I just got is all white lettering. It has a macro setting at 80mm. And it' doesn't say SMC anywhere (I thought all AF Pentax lenses were Super Multi Coated).
I alos own the one that has f1:3.5-4.7. A kit lens that came with the Z1. I once tested this against The Tokina 28-70mm 2.6. Only at very large images (2m slides on the wall) I could actually see the difference. For professional purposes I use the FA* 2.8 28-70mm ID AL. This is an absolutely brilliant lens, that can often out perform many fixed focal length lenses. The same thing can be said about the FA* 1:2.8 80-200mm - a superp lens IMO. But these are not really nice choises for the K-01, because of the huge size, so they only go on my K-5 and K20D.

Jens
