RE: Need info on Zoom lens

hi all,

anyone have info on Pentax Zoom Normal-Telephoto SMCP-DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED Autofocus Lens or Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens. i will be buying one soon but have no idea which one is better. do you think i should go with the pentax brand all the way or is the tamron brand comparable if not superior to pentax lens ? would really appreciate any input. as you know i am a newbie and just got my K100D with kit lens a week or so ago. if this has been discussed before accept my apology and please send me the link to the discussion.

thanks in advance.

Well, apart from the obvious difference in focal length, the Tamron has a "macro" mode that will allow you to get a larger magnification of your objects. Not sure if there is a switch for that or if you have to be in a certain zoom range as is the case for the Sigma 70-300, which makes the operation a bit clunky. However, the 50-200 is more compact and lighter, and a screw-on close up lens is a possibility if you want to get closer.

Hi Cl2K (hope you don't mind the shorthand of your handle)
I have the DA 50-200 and am very satisified with it. I was thinking about the Sigma 70-300 the Tamron 70-300 and the above mentioned Pentax. I made the decision based on comments made on the Pentax SLR forum on DPreview. I don't have any links but basically the threads I read stated that both the Tamron and the Sigma were somewhat soft from about 250 or so on out. I do have an old Sigma 75-300 and it is certainly true of that lens. In any event based on that information I decided to go with the Pentax. It is a great little lens, much much smaller than I expected. I got my copy second hand from Henry's in Canada, and when it came, I thought they sent me the wrong lens when I first saw it because it was so small and light. It is sharp all the way out to 200, and with the addition of a 1.4 TC (my next LBA purchase) I can get out to 280 which is close enough to 300 anyway. I've never used the Tamron so I can't comment on it.

NaCl(I'm very happy with the 50-200)H2O

NaClH2O - no problem with the shortcut. i guess i will go with the pentax since it is priced @ 199 minus the rebate so total will be 149 (not a bad price for a pentax zoom lens). one question though - does this pentax have a macro capability? thanks everyone for the tips.......
