Macro lens with TC?

I was looking through some macro photos done with an FA100/2.8 and noticed some were taken with the lens plus 1.4 and 2.0 TC's.

Is this a common practice?

What does it do to the 1:1 ratio?

Make it 1.4:1 and 2:1 respectively?

RedHawk: have you tried this???

it does two things.. either gives u the same frame fill from farther away (more working distance) or a larger frame fill at the minimum focusing distance..

so u can keep the 1:1 from further away or better it from closer up or he same working distance as without the converter..

there is some light loss.. if u use small apertures and flash lighting for greater dof this dosnt matter but if u try and use natural light it does.. and some possible quality loss not really noticable thow with a 1.4 converter..

a 2 x converter is pushing things a bit..

ps.. for macro work F2.8 is pretty much a waste of space the dof just isnt there.. F22 is more like it.. with a 2 x converter my 50mm sigma macro will manage just over a half inch frame fill.. but the working distance is far too close.. the depth of focus is less than one quarter inch at this magnification level as well even at f22..

just tried my vivitar s1 105 w/a tamron 2X. you get 2:1 max and 1:1 with the lens focused at 1:2.

with film 1:1 meant an image 35mm wide filling the frame.. this is as close as i can get with 2x tele and my sigma 50mm.. things get very inpractical thow.. he he

the small graduations are 1mm.. pic is a full frame shot of a steel ruler.. no crop..
