The Tamron 70-200 isn't really a budget lens. It's fast, it's amazing, and it's the cheapest of the 70-200s.

What can it do? It can do this:

80mm, F3.2, 1/400s

For sports, I would actually suggest the Sigma 70-200 HSM (the latest one out right now I think) or the Sigma 50-150 HSM (which you may have to find second hand).

The Tamron has great IQ and is lightweight and absolutely great bokeh, but I have trouble shooting sports with it. Even your average moving duck sometimes can be troublesome.

In IQ and bokeh perhaps, but an out of focused picture is no good while a slightly less sharp picture is still useful.

If you are good at pre-focusing and predicting action, the Tamron will be ok for sports.

Well, as long as you are willing to learn after you get the lens - it's trickier, not impossible. But for everything else, the Tamron is definitely better.

The Tamron 70-200. I do not have experience with the Tamron 70-300, but I am led to believe it is just an ordinary long slower zoom. It should not be too different from your Quantaray.
