Tele lenses hand held

I am at film (Dias) with Spotmatic F and a number of Takumar lenses up to 135/2.5 as the longest tele. Use Nikon Coolscan V Ed for digitizing (regrettably no driver for Debian Linux yet, so that I use my scanner by friends who have Microsoft OS).

135mm is often not long enough for taking pictures with my pointing breed on field trials, so that I am planning to buy a 200mm M42 mount as the longest tele for hand-held shooting. As far as I know, when hand held, shutter speed for a 200mm should be no less than 1/500 sec, which makes problem with most 200mm because, due to game behavior, trials are often run before sunrise. Therefore, my question is, how fast the 200mm should be to hopefully being able to shut at 1/500 sec.

I guess that Takumar 200/4, which is commonly found, would not be fast enough. I looked unsuccessfully for a 6-element C Zeiss Jena Sonnar 200/2.8. Which other 200mm M42 could satisfy my needs?

I am not against digital photo (in fact, rapid sequential shooting would help on field trails), provided I can use the lenses I have. Hate motorized lenses. Full frame digitals would avoid reshaping my habit at 36x24, though at the moment the only choice (to get infinity focusing) is Canon with un-affordable price for many options that I'll never use.

Thanks for advice about the 200mm.

hey ,

I think there is A CJ 200mm f2.8 now in the marketplace for 400USD ... I think .

Now I would get a zoom cause I prefer to get the picture when it's needed ( eg use it at 150mm just to get the shot sometimes , or because of the better field of view if you are close to your subject ) and generally 70-200mm 2.8 can be very good lenses .

If you want to buy a zoom , then I suggest the sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO EX . Its very good trust me . I know I would buy it because of the same performance that has with most 200mm f/2.8 The review is very good at photozone . The only drawback is the price and that it is a little bigger than a 200mm prime .

Sigma 70-200 F2.8 APO EX Pentax/Samsung fit on eBay, also, For Digital SLR, Camera Lenses, Photography (end time 15-Jan-08 19:10:57 GMT)

I dont know good m42 200mm f/2.8 lenses ... sorry

although not specifically what the OP wants to hear, but I would recommend switching to digital, because from my on experience with push processing, the present CCD technology in pentax cameras at 1600 ISO for K10D or 3200 ISO for all 6 MP cameras is far superior to what was achievable with film, pushed to the same ISO levels.

There is an added advantage that his 135 becomes equivelent to a 200mm lens, due to the crop factor.

As far as screw mount lenses, I think any of the really fast ones are quite rare,

I don't think there is any issue with respect to not going full frame, perhaps "reshaping my habit at 36x24" could be explained better because from my perspective, the ASP-C sensor size is a benefit to anyone who wants to shoot with longer lenses. the only time ASP-C sensor really comes into play is at the wide angle end of the spectrum, where you would have to get an ultra wide.

To me it sounds like the OP should be going for any of the pentax DSLRs and an M42 adaptor ring.

Hi Chiendarret!
You could try for a Pentacon or CZJ 200 1:4 (former Orestegor). I have one since 1980 and I am very satisfied with it mounted on my K100D.
Success!

My understanding is its 1/focal length - so not 1/500s but 1/200s, which is twice as fast. May not help you if its before sunrise, but every stop helps

I'll second the move to digital, but short of that, the Tak 200/4 would probably suit you well I imagine...

Honestly, time to go digital.
You get the reach you want on the tele end due to the 1.5x crop factor. More importantly with in-body shake reduction and AF, you will be able to shoot quicker, shoot more and get more keepers. Your equipment is more than 40 years old and it is time to move to the present.

The 1/focal length is to reduce the effect of hand shaking, and is not written on stone. It will not do anything for subject movement, which may demand a much higher shutter speed.
