Adam, what gives with the forum right now, radioactivity and riots?
It's because of the 1% that own 99% of the lenses. You know who you are...

yep, change them oftem particularly if you notice togs starting to be harrassed by the cops

since the ability to turn over images like this quicky is usually what is wanted i wouldn;t shoot Film as suggested above. The suggestion for an old manula lense set at hyperfocal is a good one though. I would lean to a 21 rather than a 24 myself. set it f11 (the digital hyperfocal equivalent of F8) set the hyerfocal zone to cover what you want (say 5 feet as minimum) . when the action heats up you may not have time to stand around composing so wide as possible hyperfocal shooting lets you run and shoot at the same time. A friend of mine has a Kent state image that still sells to this day. he shot it behind him on the run through a tear gas cloud.
get some gaffer tape and wrap the base of the lens to he body (Gaffer tape leaves no residue but is water resistant)
Old lens and gaffer tape covered body and they will likely leave you be it's ugly but effective at protecting things. i used to shoot protests on film that way

According to Adam we passed 1.9 million the other day with about 1400 posts a day. I think he might do a prize like he did for the 1 millionth post.

I think so.
I live in Indonesia, where demonstration tend to break into chaos. News photographers here uses tele lens to avoid getting beaten by cops, or got hit by stones thrown by protesters. Only the brave ventured with wide lens..

Good point, though it depends on the tog, Some love to get in the middle of the action (and frequently get hurt because of it). Personally I like the shots from the center of things but cops being what they are you are likely to get challenged by them

That's why I was thinking maybe the 1000mm reflex. Set it up on the roof of a building as far away as possible. But then the cops might think you're setting up an ATGW and send in the gunships...

I only once did a protest of any importants and used DA*50-135mm for that. You maybe think that you will be right in the middle, but at 50mm still alot can be captured and that lens is way better then the 18-135mm.

this was with the m 28 3.5 @ f8 or so, but this was a pretty passive (but very large 500000 people or so) protest. Paris trips almost always guarantee me a chance to shoot a protest

O have some I haven't uploaded I shot with a 14 at a barcelona protest
