I know in advance I will take some flack on this one.

Have you tried a SMC F 35-105 ? From the question you posed you were looking for economy with good results.

The 35-105 is not a perfect Macro lens but it does very well in a pinch. Plus it suits a very nice mid range zoom functionality.

As I expressed your emphasis was on economy. Well this option is very economical and fits quite a good mid range.
