My new big boy toy

After FedEx irreparably damaged my 135-600mm Pentax zoom, I found this 500mm f4.5 to replace it with. When I got it, the rear section had a bit of a wobble so I disassembled it, replaced some screws and put it back together. So far so good.
I've taken a few test shots so far though I still shoot film and I don't have a neg scanner, so no test shots to post online yet. I have a friend with a DSLR and a neg scanner, so one way or another I'll get some samples. So far I'm quite impressed, it's pretty sharp at f4.5 and out of focus areas are pleasing. There is just a touch of red/pink fringing in high contrast areas, but it's pretty easy to ignore.

wowowowow... No way that little ballhead is rated for that kind of weight... I hope you are ordering a new head and maybe even a new tripod! ;^)

The tripod is certainly too flimsy. The gimbal head I want is a few hundred bucks, so I'm just going to make my own for a new tripod. I'm also going to build a monopod for it.

Wow, Mike, that piece could attract attention from the opposite sex from miles away.

E-Fetchin-Gads! That thing is monstrous! The amazing thing is that it only has 4 pieces of glass in it!

I was always wondering what a 400mm f/2.8 would look like... I'm guessing very similar just a little shorter.

Big Boy Toys is right... I'm in wub!

I agree, that thing is huge especially for just 4 glass elements. I read that the Tair-3 300/4.5 (from fotosniper) has only 3 elements haha.

A little shorter maybe, but definitely nowhere near as skinny as that lens!! 400mm f/2.8 will be much fatter around!!
