Canon vs Pentax

I've recently found a friend who is selling some dirt cheap canon lenses, which I am considering buying. He is selling the ultra-light 50mm f1.8, and the 90-300mm. I was wondering what the comparisons are price wise compared to the pentax 50mm f1.8, and the 55-300(I think?) tele. I understand I will have to get an adapter. Both are in fairly good condition, except for the AF on the 50, which doesn't work.

He is selling the 50mm for £50 and the 90-300 for £85, but I can get a deal for both.

The question is, is it worth it?

You will not need to get an adapter, you will need to get a Canon camera. I've never heard of an adapter to mount EF lenses on Pentax, and it would be hard to make. The other way around is easy enough as long as your lens has an aperture ring though.

Short answer: Canon lenses just don't work on PK-mount cameras, period.

Longer answer: Some Canon lenses can conceivably be rebuilt to work on PK-mount cameras, but with severe limitations. I haven't seen any EOS->PK adapters; if such exist, they would be optical (ie short teleconverters) thus changing the properties of the Canon lenses.

Universal answer: Not worth it.

and those 2 lenses aren't ones that make getting a Canon camera worth it either

Wow. I don't think I have seen a thread so definitively end. Especially with a title like this. Good job.

I would get a FF canon body or a sony nex to use the canon glasses.
The best canon glasses I have used are 20/2.8, 24/1.4, 55/1.2, 85/1.2, 17-55/2.8L, 70-200/4L, 70-200/2.8L

Do you think that might be in a bit of different league as the the ~$175 in lenses mentioned? 50/1.8 and somehow that jumps to the 85/1.2? sigh

If AF on the 50mm does not work, then maybe it's not worth much.
A Nex body would be a good choice for the canon lenses.

However, any manual focus is a better choice than a defected AF lens: due to short focus throw of AF lenses, it's more difficult to MF.
Pentax M50/1.7 is the best bang for the money. Sharp in all apertures.

For the 90-300 AF, you may consider to get a dirt cheap used canon body like 400d. I saw these are selling for 150usd.
The lens is not usable on pentax bodies. Using with the sony nex still need MF. A cheap used sony nex also went around 150usd, but you can use any lens, any brand with adapter.

Of course, it depends on how cheap you can get these canon lenses.

Try borrowing a Canon from a friend and see if you like the interface.
Personally, i think Canon has the least user friendly user interface (miles behind Nikon).

Pentax has the best UI.

To buy into a new system with the two lenses and you have listed is not worth it.
