I don't know which is the sharpest 28mm, but a couple of posters had mentioned the Kiron f2 and thought I'd post some images I took with it. The only other 28 I had was the F28/2.8 and sold it. I don't use this Kiron much either and might put it up for sale. Bought it in a whim as 28/2 sounded so good.

This last shot I took wideopen at f2 to see how it does with bright lights at night which would be handy for such a fast wide lens.

The Zeiss 28/2.0 is totally superb and the 28/2.8 is only half a notch lower at a much lower price !

Pentax (K) SMC 28mm f/3.5 examples

Unsharpened shot, only resized to 1150 px high.

And two unsharpened 100% crops to show resolution/sharpness. Shot hand held with my K-5 at f/8.

Well, that would be Les and I. Received an email from Les about the 28/2.8 that I had posted a lens review on and the result was the comparison. The 28's are usually sharp lenses anyway, based on the focal length. The optics are free of large distortions - you don't have to bend the light a lot, and they are generally very clean optical designs. There are a lot of wonderful images here demonstrating the capabilities of this focal length. The entire question of what lens is the absolute "sharpest", is somewhat subjective anyway. I don't know of any conclusive test, that can numerically rate and compare the lenses quantitatively. The best test is probably a side by side image comparison. For every test and scoring methodology, someone will have a problem. Even the DXO test there are folks that have problem with their tests and have other approaches. It was not my intention to go off on that tangent at all.

What it comes down to is finding a lens that you can afford to acquire (without going broke) and provides pleasing images to your "photographer's" eye.

This thread has lots of information in it across any number of great lenses, going for a surprisingly large range in price. Each lens has its own character, color rendering, approaches to sharpness. Some succeed very well and others not so well. I guess we are all looking for that combination that succeeds very well. I was able to pick up the CZ 28/2.8 because I wanted to compare it to the 31Ltd and actually see for myself what the differences were. I had read that the Zeiss microrendering was really nice. It was something that I though I could afford at the time - in comparison to the new Zeiss glass, and would most likely retain its value. The lens has a an excellent combination of optical qualities, produces wonderful images with great clarity, resolution and sharpness (there is that term again). I like it a lot.

probably a zeiss. Don't go for sharpness though, try some out and see what feels best. Or, failing that, look at images and see what looks the best to you. You'll pay through the teeth for the zeiss, but it's going to be insanely sharp.

Overall the K28/2 is the best lens that Pentax made in this FL.
Phil.
It is the best 28mm in K mount I have.
Razor sharp and contrastful wide open.
Results won't need to post processing.
Awesome lens!

Didn't red whole thread so I ask,

is Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm F2.8 worth it's price compared to Pentax K 28mm F3.5?

I don't have the Zeiss but if you look at 'value for money', the Pentax is very hard to beat. I got my K28 f/3.5 for 120 USD and it impresses me every time I use it.

The Zeiss will probably be a bit better for a lot more money It depends on what you are willing to spend.

Get the K28/3.5 if you can. It's pixel level for landscape.

I dont have the M version, so get the K version to be sure. It's a little bigger but I can confirm it's razor sharp.

The Zeiss is definitely worth the money, the K looks like it's worth more than you will pay for it !

There is a cheaper 28 2.8 than the Distagon which is better than the K 28 3.5 but will need some work on it to fit pentax - Nikkor Ai/Ais 28 2.8
