lens choice?

Hello Folks,

After testing my old Sigma UC ZOOM 70-210 lens on my new K-5 (in manual focus mode) I've concluded that it is not going to satisfy me. The Sigma doesn't come close to the 18-55 kit lens in color rendition or sharpness. As I need more reach than I get with the 18-55 kit lens, I've reviewed the Pentax zoom lenses on the lower end of the price spectrum, and it appears that the DA 55-300mm F:4-5.8 ED is head and shoulders above the DA 50-200mm F:4-5.6 WR and the DA 18-135mm F:3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] WR. I'm disappointed in that, because I would rather have a WR lens.

What are your thoughts on these three lenses? Do the reviews do them justice?

Thanks, Tom

They can have my 55-300 when the pry it from my cold dead hands. Or when they release a WR.

DA 55-300 is very hard to beat. Both for IQ and for weight, general useability. I also have a Pentax F 70-210 that I think does a nice job if you like that range but it is much heavier than the 55-300 and of course the range is duplicated.

I have the DA L version and would not part with it. Except that I will be right behind boriscleto in line for the WR version with quick shift.

Have to echo the two above. Regardless what zoom lens I have used, for the money and IQ you have to love the 55-300. It's always in my bag.

Bonjour,

I have (or rather should I say "My wife has ...") my 55-300 and I would love to see a WR version, too ... forget the "cold dead hands" being mine though! Ha!

Salut, John le Frog

"Head and shoulders" is a relative term. I've seen posted comparison shots, and except when pixel peeping at 100%, I can't tell the difference.

Hello Folks,

I read and appreciate your responses, and then I went back and read the reviews again. The reviews of the 50-200mm WR lens weren't as bad as I had felt the first time I read them; those and the comment by Marc Sabatella, along with my budget constraints, caused me to rethink my priorities. So, I ordered a Pentax DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED WR Zoom Lens from B&H. I'm still interested in the 55-300 lens, and will watch for Pentax to bring it out in a WR version. Anyway, thank you for your help, and please don't think I ignored your information. My decision was heavily influenced by budget.

Sincerely, Tom

If WR is what you want you don't have a choice, but the DA L 55-300 is available for around the same price as the 50-200 WR on eBay.
