Pentax F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5?

Hello Folks,

I've read some very nice comments about the Pentax F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. In particular, it's said to be a very nice lens, and is supposed to be on the used market at very low prices. My question is, where (besides eBay) can I go bargain hunting for a lens like this?

Thanks, Tom

Try shopgoodwill.com. I got mine with a SF1. But beware, eBay speculators have ruined the site for bargains.

There's been a few of these listed right here on the PF Marketplace in the last few weeks. There might be one there right now.

1. Go here: The Pentax Marketplace | Sell Pentax | Photographic Equipment for Sale - PentaxForums.com
2. Click on "Watch New Keyword"
3. Type in "35-70mm" (and/or "F 35-70) and submit
4. You will get an e-mail once a lens matching this keyword is listed

Yes, this is a great system which works as advertised... and is horrible for your budget!

I've seen more than a few on eBay recently. Fear it not.

Best Buy?

Hi Tom,
You could try the major camera stores like KEH, Adorama, etc. The used sections have some pretty good deals and the ratings (condition of lens) are generally honest. They're not the absolute lowest prices, but you get what you pay for and have some recourse if you're not satisfied.
Overall I have no problem with eBay. Granted you should look carefully at every picture of the equipment (especially the glass) but I've been sucessful many times.
And the F 35-70 is a dandy! You'll have trouble taking it off the camera, it's such fun. Here's a few samples;

The other way to find the F35-70 is to look for one stuck to a Pentax SFX film SLR body or a similar model. These bodies were released at about the same time as th F series lenses. If you are lucky you will find someone selling grandpa's old, carefully stored SLR kit and they have no idea that the lenses are usable on todays cameras, or that the lenses are each worth more than the 40 bucks they want for the whole kit.

At least that's the theory; I'll find out if it works when I pick up my SFX + F35-70 + F70-210 tomorrow morning!

That's how I got mine. SF-1 body plus F35-70 on eBay for US$22 shipped. Then I stuck a $2 2x TC on the SF-1 body and sold those for ten bucks. Nice cheap lens!

I got a SF1 with the 35-70 and 70-210 for $125 on shopgoodwill. But that was before the eBay speculators started sniping.

As an aside, I just saw this on Craigslist

F35-70 is an optically excellent lens but suffers from rather cheap build quality so the prices tend to be quite low. They were the kit lens of days past so they are all over Ebay and in the Marketplace often. If there aren't any today, one or more will likely turn up soon. I wouldn't spend more than $50 on one.

I have the 35-70 & 70-210, and I do like them very much. I feel like the 35-70 is better than the kit lens of today(18-55) as far as IQ. I got mine off ebay: 35-70 for $50 & 70-210 for $62.

Like my FA100-300 (silver), my F35-70's cheap build quality has lasted quite well for about 20 years, so I won't complain.

My last 35-70 didn't quite handle a month of heavy use in the Single in January challenge a couple of years ago. I was taking it on xc ski trips and I think the cold got the best of it. I still use it on occasion for close ups as all that works is 70mm and the macro range. The image quality is still top notch.

The theory held up! I picked up the kit today. A good condition F35-70 and what looks like a barely used F70-210 for $70 aussie dollars. With a SFX body (untested) thrown in to boot. Worth looking out for.
