Yes, swapping lenses is a major pain that results in missed shots. The IQ of a missed shot is zero. A zoom with enough coverage is best. So, the decision crunch: Do you need wider than 24mm? Or do you need longer than 50mm? You can't get both in one lens. A couple obvious solutions come to mind:

* Get an 18-135 or 18-250; boost ISO as needed.
* Use two or more cameras, with appropriate lenses.

If you want to get a norma-telephoto zoom - which any 28-XX lens would be - I'd just get a *real* telephoto zoom. But that won't solve the need for something wide-normal.

You picked your original combo for a reason. They are amazing lenses. The only reason to change your original plan would be if you are planning ongoing full frame if/when it is available.

That's just my opinion.

I know you ask for an opinion about a zoom lens.
Given the price of DA16-50 has gone up considerably and unless you need a zoom, why not get the FA31 Ltd and FA77 Ltd instead.
If you are after IQ, go for the Ltd prime.
I used to have the Nikkor 24-70 G zoom and a D700 and it is supposed to be one of the best zoom. I can tell you a US$500 Voigtlander prime is sharper than the Nikkor zoom in good light.
All the best with your decision.

All. Thanks so very much for your thoughts.

I know this might sound a bit snobish and Canikon fanboy (for which I appologise now), but I'm coming from a 24-70/2.8 L which is a stonking, quick and sharp piece of glass and don't want to feel "dissapointed" with the alternatives on what I know to be a top-notch camera of a K-5 - proven by the fact that the 24-70 sold for more than my 7D! (but then again after using a Leica Summicron 50/2 everything else feels and produces rubbish including the lovely Zeiss 21/2.8 ZE I had!)

If only there was a Leica dsigned and made FA* 15-70/2.8 WR Ltd. for 600 ! :P

Until that day arrives, I'll see if I can get a decent used DA* 16-50/2.8 or 17-70/4 as a starter, and also a 70 or 77 ltd at first. That should cover general walking around and nice portrait shots of my 2 yr old daughter.

But my long-list is looking like a kit list of one of the following types depending on what's available at the time I can afford things!:

General walk around:
16-50/2.8, or
17-70/4

WA:
A 20/2.8, or
FA 20/2.8, or
DA 21/3.2 Ltd, or
FA* 24/2

"Normal":
DA 40/2.8 Ltd, or
FA 43/1.9 Ltd, or
A 50/1.4

Short-Tele:
DA 70/2.4 Ltd, or
FA 77/1.8 Ltd

ALL I ASK NOW IS THAT PEOPLE STOP REVIEWING THE LENSE AND SAYING THAT SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN SOMETHING ELSE OR THAT AS AN ALTERNATIVE...

Seriously though, can't wait to get my hands on the K-5 and whatever lens I get and start taking damn photos again!!! I hate point and clicks, and it's nearly the bank holiday season here!!!

Have a great weekend everyone, and if the sun's shining for you too, get the BBQ on...

DA*16-50 + APSC is just as sharp as 24-70L + FF.

I have no experience on 24-70 + APSC.
I guess it all depends on what focal length you want.

If you need a zoom to get by, just get the DA 18-135mm... spend your money on the Limiteds.
