If you had a million pounds...

This has been keeping me preoccupied for days, and I may be feeding LBA here, or just dreaming way too much during classes… but…

If you had a million pounds what would be your first lens to buy?

Or would you go for a camera body?

A million pounds of what?

Oh, you mean Pounds Sterling

Actually, I already have what seems like a million pounds of lenses (50 in total)

Really, though, I can imagine something like an FA400/2.8 an equivalent lens. but really not that much else. maybe a couple of new DA primes, and a few missing legacy lenses. but overall I'm happy with my gear

If I had 1.7 Million dollars (as converted dollars) I would seek out the Pentax lenses that only show in historical pictures - as in no one *really* owns them. Then I would buy everything 645D, then I would ask to buy the Pentax MZ-D prototype. I suppose I wouldn't have much left over.

I'd call my boss and quit my job.

Next, I'd grab a cpl of plane tickets for me and the missus and travel around the world visiting camera stores specialized in used gear.

First on the list to try to find would be a nice 6x7 kit in mint condition. An old Leica setup would be interesting too, but I'd need to read up on that one...

1.7 mill? I would buy a K-5, the 55-300 and a couple more Takumars 85mm, 300mm, maybe a 28mm or a 35mm. Then I'd buy a cheap building with 2 floors somewhere cool. I'd live and work on one floor, have a gallery on the lower one. Show off some of my own stuff and rent out the extra gallery space to artists of all kinds that I like. Have shows, sell stuff hopefully, make a living doing my thing.

With 1.7 Million USD I would buy the FA31ltd, another flash or two, and the bigma. Then I would call my boss and tell him that I am finally going full-time into photography and pay myself what I earn now out of the 1.7 as I dedicate myself to going from part-time to full time photographer. I would also seriously consider getting a nice 645D kit going...

House is paid for. Cars are paid for. Camera and lenses are paid for. Guitars, banjos and lutes are paid for. I guess I'd buy some more Navaho rugs.

I'd probably start with a Zeiss prime collection.
TBH, I'm beginning to feel as though I've peeked in LBA for the time being. Though something tells me I'd likely put my money in areas other than camera's. ie. house and property, cabin w/dock and boat etc etc. Don't get me wrong, camera's are great and all but lets not forget... these are merely tools that we use to capture the real moments with(remembering the real moments exist ).

Then again... I'd likely build a house around photography.
That is to say... very tall ceilings.... vaulted ceilings.... second story banisters... u know the usual.

Let's say I had 50 million dollars.

Camera stuff:
  • another Pentax K-5 body
  • DA 300 and when it comes out DA 560mm lens
  • complete set of Pentax primes, except the 70mm which I have
  • Pentax 645D and the lenses made for it
  • Leica M9 rangefinder ...21mm, 50mm, 90mm Leica lenses. I have a 60 year old Leica 11F rangefinder...excellent camera...want the new one.
  • Nikon D 800, 14-24mm Nikkor lens, 500 MM F 5 Nikkor lens
  • That's it...for now
  • One more thing...top of the line Chevy Suburban, 4WD, 1500 series SUV as my camera wagon....excellent on the road, excellent in the rough stuff.

I would buy the FA limiteds and the longer FA* lenses.

Hopefully that would be enough to satisfy LBA.
